History of the Garbage Bin

Garbage bins are everywhere, from our homes and businesses, to public parks and event centers.
With these garbage disposals surrounding us wherever we go, how did they originate? Where did
they start? And how have they changed? In this article, we hope to answer these questions
by providing an overview of the history of the garbage bin.
EnlightenMe provides an in-depth look into the history here. In the article, it takes a look at the
garbage bin’s first appearance, the era leading up to modern times, and the garbage bin today.
First Appearance
The garbage bin first originated in England in 1875 and was used to store the ashes of burned
waste, with residents being charged to have these receptacles emptied weekly. In 1885, the United
States followed suit with England by implementing a waste management system in New York City.
When incinerating garbage became more common, garbage transport with horse-drawn carts were
replaced with motor-powered carts.
Mid 1900’s
In the decades following, inventions in plastic created the need to categorize waste into proper
disposing methods, expanding the need for more garbage bins, and the term “recycling” being a
well-known term by 1968. Due to population growth and an industrial boost of a consumerist society,
garbage use skyrocketed, and so did the number of garbage receptacles. Because the necessity of
having garbage receptacle open in plain view was inevitable, people began to decorate, paint, and
modify garbage bins to look more appealing.
Modern Times
In current times, garbage bins have been modified to allow pick-up companies like A-1 Disposal use
trucks with large robotic arms to dispose of large garbage bins quickly and efficiently. Some even
have wheels to allow the user to maneuver the bins more easily. With advances in technology and
design, we can expect further development and modification of garbage disposal bins to enable
“even more” efficiency for society
