FAEN 103 BASIC MECHANICS

ASSIGNMENT 1

1. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant

FR = F1 + F2 + F3 of the three forces by first finding the resultant
F’ = F1 + F3 and then forming FR = F’ + F2. Specify its direction
measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis.

2.
a) If θ = 60° and F = 450 N, determine the magnitude of the resultant force
and its direction, measured counterclockwise from the positive x axis,
using the parallelogram and triangle rule of vector addition only.
b) If the magnitude of the resultant force is to be 500 N, directed along the
positive y axis, determine the magnitude of force F and its direction θ,
using the parallelogram and triangle rule of vector addition only.

3.
a) Determine the magnitude of the resultant force FR = F1 + F2 and its
direction, measured clockwise from the positive u axis.
b) Resolve the force F1 into components acting along the u and v axes and
determine the magnitudes of the components.
c) Resolve the force F2 into components acting along the u and v axes
and determine the magnitudes of the components.
