9.0 HEAT SHRINK SLEEVE APPLICATION

METHODOLOGY
Weld area shall be thoroughly cleaned with Granet/Sand blasting and the
profile achieved after blasting shall be in between 50-100 micron.
Blasting material shall be garnet or sand. During blasting compliance of
proper PPEs (Ex. Sand blasting hood) will be followed. The exposed steel
and coated area should be cleaned of all Foreign Materials. Either sides
of weld joint coating shall be protected with fire blanket wrap around.
Using heating torch with Brushing gas cylinder and adjusting the flame
length to produce controlled flame. Heat the pipe evenly until required
temperature (230-245°C) is achieved.

Wrap the issued sheet around the pipe weld, the sheet should over-lap the
sheet by 2” minimum. This will make a tube larger than the pipe diameter.
Sheet end that comes over the top of pipe should be on the top of over-
lap.

With Gloved hand, patch down the closure and smooth any wrinkles by
gently working them outward from the center of the closure. Press the

sleeve in position centering over the exposed sheet end. Pre heat the bare
pipe surface up to required temperature, adjacent line coating must be
heated per manufacture recommendations. Using a pyrometer ensure that
proper pre heat has been achieved. Slide the sleeve over the joint area
centering it over the weld.

Continue shrinking the sleeve until it is completely recovered. When the

sleeve has been shrunk onto the joint area and is still hot and soft. Run a
small hand roller over the sleeve to push out any trapped air. When the
sleeve has cooled, examine the edge for proper adhesion.

At the end needs to ensure the following.

 The sleeve has fully conformed to the pipe and adjacent coating.

 Here are no cold spots or dimples on the sleeve surface.

 Weld bead profile can be seen through the sleeve.

 After sleeve is cool, adhesive flow is evident on both edges.

Proposed section shall be checked with Holiday Detector before lower-in.

Detected area will be marked for epoxy coating repair by using client
recommended material and per manufacturer procedure.

Coating surface shall be abraded and clean. The particular area to be

repaired shall be roughening using wire brushes, grinding disks etc shall
be suitable stainless steel types for brushes and negative carbon or
ceramic grinding disks. sandpaper / half round file and wipe to clean all
dust.
