Earthquake is the shaking of a part of the earth’s surface that often causes great damage.
It is one of the natural calamities that cannot be detected and it can happen anytime. It is a
shaking or trembling of the earth that is volcanic or tectonic in origin. Tectonic if the plates of the
ground move with each other and volcanic if it is cause by the eruption of a volcano.
Last December 15, 2017, there was a simultaneous earthquake drill nationwide. It was
started through an orientation by sharing the knowledge on duck, cover and hold tips to be
observed during an earthquake. Children indeed learned and understood those tips shared by
the teachers of Sumalo Elementary School in order to be well prepared in times of earthquake.
At exactly 2:00 pm, an alarm was used to signal pupils and teachers to duck, cover and
hold then prepared to move outside and find an open area which is safe from trees and buildings.
The pupils aligned themselves as they heard the siren and went out from their respective
classroom and moved to a safe place. The teachers made sure that the children were calm in
doing the said drill.
