Urban Storm Water

Drainage Design
At the end of the week, students should be
able to:
► understand the concept of Design rainfall
and Design Flow (CO3-PO3);
► apply hydrological procedures in Manual
Saliran Mesra Alam Malaysia (MSMA) for
urban storm water design (CO3-PO3);

Drainage Design
Lined Drain
► Highly resistance to erosion.
► Lining materials includes:
▪ Plain concrete
▪ Reinforce concrete
▪ Stone pitching
▪ Plastered brickwork
▪ Precast masonry blocks.

Design Criteria
► Geometry

► Side slope

► Freeboard – a minimum of 50 mm above design

stormwater level in the minor drain.
► Minimum average velocity for minor drain, 0.6  v
 2 m/s. A 1.2 m high handrail fence or covered
with metal grates for velocity 2.0 m/s < v < 4 m/s
► Roughness Coefficient (Table 2.3)
► Drainage Sumps – Minimum size 450 mm x 450
mm. Maximum interval spacing of 100 m.

SWALES
► Broad and shallow channel
► Covered by dense vegetation to slow down
runoff at non-erosive velocity
► Enhance water quality through infiltration,
sedimentation and filtration.
