MODEL FOR UHV SUBSTATION IN URBAN AREAS

With the increase in demand in the urban areas like Mumbai, there is a need of UHV substation near to
the concentrated load centre to cater to the increase in demand. In conventional UHV substation
insulation requirement are leading to increase of mechanical dimensions of all equipments. A typical
land requirement for establishing air insulated UHV substation is 15000 m2 minimum per bay only for
UHV side (approximately). The total land requirement for establishing UHV substation shall be more
than the above mentioned area considering the number of bays , configuration ( switched or non-
switched) ,EHV feeder configurations & station auxiliaries. However with the continuously
developing infrastructures in and around the cities the land availability for UHV shall always be a
challenge around urban areas. Further ,considering that the habitation around the UHV substations
challenges persist due to unwanted tripping attributed to birds, kite thread etc. Therefore to address
reliability, security & foot print of the UHV substation shall be of greater concern. Hence GIS
technology shall be preferred over conventional AIS system for establishing UHV substation for cities.
UHV substations can be planned based on the above mentioned concept used for establishing EHV
substation in urban areas. The plot shall contain outdoor 800 kV terminal gantry for incoming lines,
outdoor 800 kV GIS, 800 / 400 kV & 400 kV / 220 kV outdoor Transformers, Indoor 400kV & 220kV
GIS in vertical building including all control , protection & automations system& station auxiliaries.
The 400kV & 220kV side interconnections shall be through buried cables. The substation shall also be
provided with necessary safety requirements suitable considering all aspects for development in urban
areas. A conceptual model layout for UHV substation in urban areas is shown in Fig 8. (Based on the
general arrangement received from the regular equipments suppliers).

The concepts used in this paper shall soon be the reality for establishing UHV stations in urban areas,
however infrastructure development in & around cities like Mumbai shall be a challenge with several
local municipal regulations to comply. The city planners & authorities need to provide special
consideration to these installations & planning for UHV substations shall be done considering the local
municipal requirements. The availability of skilled manpower, experienced supplier & contractors
within schedule shall play a major role for UHV installations.
