Laboratory Activity No. 4

I. Title: Light Maze Prediction

II. Objectives:

• To demonstrate your understanding of the Law of Reflection - you will direct a path of light
around an obstacle course by reflecting it in three different mirrors.

III. Problem:

• How will the students demonstrate their understanding of the Law of Reflection through
this activity?

IV. Hypothesis: (Null hypothesis)

• If three mirrors are used to create a direct path around an obstacle then the laser won’t
bounce and reflect to complete the obstacle

V. Materials:

• Laser pointer

• Flat mirrors

• Clamps

• 12” ruler with cm tick marks

VI. Summary of procedure: (Narrative, Past tense)

• From the starting point, a line goes through three changes in direction to finally arrive at the
finish/end point. It will be the group’s job to set up mirrors to reflect laser light down the
paths to the finish point. In the three places where the lines change directions, the group drew
a short line to represent how the group would place mirrors to reflect light to follow the path
of lines in the drawing. The group placed the mirrors at the three locations the group have
drawn on the page, the the group directed the laser pointer to shine a line through the starting
spot, down the first line to the first mirror and adjusted the second and last mirrors to make a
direct path to the end point.

VII. Illustration of set-up:

VIII. Data and Observation:

X. Guide Questions:

1. What is your reason for positioning the lines in this particular manner?

• The reasoning for positioning the mirror in that manner is to make a direct path
where the laser will bounce and end in the end point.

2. How well did you do

• Started slow but quickly, the students figured out the basic Laws of Reflection and
did well.

3. Discuss where your main problems or misconception where when you tried this
activity the first time.
• The main problem was the positioning of the mirrors.

XI. Conclusion:

Positioning mirror 1 that makes the incident ray bounce in a 55 degrees angle to the
mirror 2 and the reflected ray will make an 83 degrees sharp turn as it bounces on the smooth
surface and lastly hitting the mirror 3 were the reflected ray will make a 29 degrees turn in
respect if the last reflected ray and lastly Finnish the obstacle by hitting the end point,
proving the light obeys the Laws of Reflection.
