Submit a comprehensive environmental assessment report for University of
Engineering and Technology Taxila to improve the environmental
conditions within the University while considering following aspects;
• Water Supply And Sewerage Systems
• Solid Waste Management
• Air Quality – Indoor And Out Door
• Noise Level
• Cultural Environment
• Religious Environment
• Socio-Economic
• Landscape
• Flora And Fauna
• New Development

Water Supply And Sewerage Systems:

Water Supply:

Initially UET Taxila used to get water supply from HMC but now it has its own water
supply provided by three pumps which were installed in a recent time. Two pumps are
installed near “Administration Block” while the third one is installed near Bilal Masjid in
the play ground. Out of these three pumps two work regularly while the third one is used
when there is some low supply of water from the first two. Depth of bore hole is from
350-400 ft, pipe dia. is 6” and pipe material is mild steel

Recommendations:

Water supply system is quite good in the university and needs very little improvements
like seepage from pipes, proper purification before using it for drinking purposes and its
minimum lose as water table is lowering day by day.

Sewerage Systems:

The sewerage system of university is not quite good. Water from houses and departments
is collected at man holes by RCC pipes, having a diameter of 6 inches and then from here
waste water is transferred to main line manholes. Two main disposal points of this waste
water is at university gate # 02 in a stream and the second one is at gate # 01 in a well
which is not working at the moment and water is causing a pond like situation there. No
screens are used and no treatment is done prior to disposal.
Recommendations:

Sewerage system needs real serious considerations as its collection near gate # 01 in west
direction causing diseases in neighborhood and irritating the watch men sitting there all
the time. Proper disposal of this waste water is necessary as that time is not far when this
waste water will be flowing on road if its proper treatment is not done.

Solid Waste Management:

Solid waste in different forms is present in the university like the biomedical waste near
the dispensary, meal waste near canteens, paper waste near photo state shops and waste of
concrete blocks near the concrete lab.

Waste like biomedical and the one collected from hostels is burnt. Waste collectors used
for this purpose are of variable sizes and are made from fiber material.
Recommendations:

Although there is a dumping well is present in the east direction near boundary wall but
no dumping is done there. The need is that waste should be properly dumped so as to stop
environment from polluting.

Air Quality – Indoor And Out Door:

Air quality in university is quite nice. As university is situated away from the main city so
there is very limited traffic there, as a result no smoke and fresh air. Moreover there is no
serious industry nearby which can add any dangerous gases in atmosphere. Also the
presence of plants makes the environmental very natural.

The class rooms are vast and there is very nice provision of ventilation by the help of
windows and ventilators.

Recommendations:

The waste material in spite of burning should be properly dumped so as to save air from
polluting.

Noise Level:

As there is very little traffic and no noise of any industry nearby, so noise level in the
university is normal. In case of constructing of buildings like “Ali hostel” there is
disturbance for students already living in nearby hostel. Also there is very high
disturbance in library and Bilal masjid with a very minor whispering due to deficiencies
in design of building.

Recommendations:
The labs like the two mentioned above should be installed away from classes.

Cultural Environment:

UET Taxila provides full freedom to all the human beings to protect and represent there
culture. There is no restriction for any student of dressing. Any student feels free to
represent his culture. University has also buildup some societies to protect and represent
one’s culture.

Religious Environment:

University environment is very religious. Every one is free to follow his religion. No
restriction is there for any one. There are also some non-Muslim foreigner students and
teachers who can worship according to their religion with no fear or restrictions. There is
also provision of Islamic books in the library of the university for students. Student
travels for “Shab-e-Juma” on each Thursday on university buses.
Socio-Economic:

Different companies like mobile network companies come for their publicity and
marketing and provides benefits to students at lesser prices as compared to market prices
so this university provides socio-economic. As it is a government university so prices of
goods like photo copy and meal is also very low as compared to market one.

Landscape:

There is a saying,
"All my life through, the new sights of nature made me rejoice like a child. "
University is situated in a very beautiful area around which there are “Margilla hills” on
all sides. The site of university makes every one feel fresh and alive. Pure nature is
present here. Its best thing is its simplicity.

Flora And Fauna:

Flora means the plant life of a region and fauna means the animal life of a region. The
university has great collection of plants now planted of a new society named as
“Environment Protection Society (EPS)” but there are some naturally growed shrubs and
bushes which need to be removed as it is causing pollution.
Animal life in this institute is also causing environmental loss as there are many
wandering dogs and cats near canteens even in hostels.

New Development:

Some new developments in university is formation of “Environment Protection Society

(EPS)”.
