Capacity

Worked Example 1
Water pours into a cylindrical tank of base radius 3 m at a constant rate of 1.2 kl
per hour. How much does the water level rise in 6 hours?

Answer
Let h be the rise in water level.
V r 2h
1.2 6 3.14 3 2 h
h 0.255
Therefore the water level rises 0.255 m.

Density
The density of an object is its mass divided by its volume.
mass
density
volume

Worked Example 2
A rectangular block of metal measures 20 cm 30 cm 40 cm. It has a density of
3.25 g/cm3. Find the mass of the object in kilograms.

Answer
mass volume density
20 30 40 3.25
78000 g
78kg

2. A rectangular block of metal measures 25 cm 30 cm 32 cm. It has a density of 4
g/cm3. Find the mass of the object in kilograms.

3. A rectangular metal of dimension 5 m 4 m 3 m is melted to recast a number of

metal balls with radius 1 cm. How many the metal balls can be made?

4. A metal sphere of radius 4 m is melted to form a cone of base radius 5 m.

(a) What is the height of the cone formed.
(b) What is the percentage change in total surface area.

5. A rectangular tank of base dimension 5 m 4.5 m and the height 6 m is filled with
water up to 3 m.
(a) If a metal sphere with radius 2 m is put into the tank, what will be the water
level rise to?
(b) If a metal cube with side length 4 m is put into the tank, what will be the water
level rise to?

6. A enclosed cone with base radius 4 m and height 5 m is fill with water. If the cone is
inverted (the base area down), the water level will be 3.6 m. What will be the water
level if the cone is put up side down.

7. The figure shows a cone base with a hemisphere on top.

(a) Find the volume of the figure.
(b) Find the ratio of r and h if the volume of the cone is
the same as the volume of the hemisphere.
(c) The two objects are made of different materials. If the
mass of the cone is twice that of the hemisphere. What is
the ratio of their mass?
