Summary writing, and citation style

Problem statement: Write a summary (in 500 words) about your proposed research
area of interest.

Description: This summary is meant to be a statement about some important aspects of

your research area. It is "summary" of status in the field. The literature review will
involve looking at many other resources, but this summary should include few important
resources that highlight the research area. In this summary, include references
wherever applicable. Also give an appropriate title to your summary.

As an example, click here to see a 200 word summary written for the topic "Ionic
polymers as fuel cell membranes".

The following is a check list that you should use as you prepare the summary:

I. Typographical:

1. Did I check for spelling errors?

2. Did I check for grammatical errors? (this would include incorrect grammer, as well
as mix-up of tense, improper voice etc)
3. Did I check for proper punctuation?
4. Did I follow consistent formating in terms of fonts, justification, paragraph style
etc?

II. Plagiarism:

1. Did I avoid cut/paste whole sentence from another source?

2. Did I acknowledge information obtained from another source?

III. References:

1. Did I follow the "exact" format for reference list? (this includes, small details like
whether dot is used after initial, journal name is abbreviated or not etc. A standard
abbreviation style should be followed.)
2. Did I follow the "exact" format for citation? (this includes, style of brackets,
whether number-wise or other formats, superscript or normal text etc)
3. Did the numbered references increase from the lowest to highest in the abstract?
IV. Technical content:

1. Is there a flow of ideas from the first sentence to another?

2. Is the abstract too simplistic or too complicated? In other words, have I written it
keeping in mind the readers. (For this assignment, assume that the readers are
your PhD committee members)
3. Is the abstract talking about "literature"? In other words, does it digress into your
work plan / future prospects etc.
4. Does the abstract include the latest advances? Also, is the discussion focused on
a topic
?
