ASSIGNMENT No. 2
Assignment 2 is based on a research-oriented activity. You are required to study the
relevant area/conduct research and prepare a brief report on your findings in the area
given. You will then have to submit one copy of the report to the tutor within the
scheduled period and at the same time present the report/project in one of the tutorials
(the schedule/plan of the tutorials for the presentations will be intimated by the tutor
concerned or the Regional Director). The compulsory presentation carries 100 marks, 40
marks for the written report and 60 for the presentations.
You may use transparencies, charts or any other relevant material for impressive
presentation with the permission of your tutor.
Select a suitable conversational exchange from any prime time talk show aired on
Pakistani electronic media. You may audio/ video record it while it is being aired or
download from the channel’s website if the option exists. Transcribe the conversation by
following the transcription conventions and apply the approach of conversation analysis
to find out how far Grice’s Cooperative Principle is followed or violated in the talk show.
Present your findings and interpret them to draw inferences and conclusions.

Select a suitable conversational exchange from the classroom discourse. You may audio/
video record it after seeking the informed consent from the participants. Transcribe the
conversation and analyze it with respect to Sinclair’s categories of discourse in general
and with particular reference to five level of classroom discourse he postulated. Present
your findings and interpret them to draw inferences and conclusions.
