INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Notice Board is the most uniform and primary apparatus in any

university, schools or public places like bus stations, railway stations and

parks. But fixing and changing various notices of instruction on a day-to-

day is a difficult process. The main objective of the project is to develop a

wireless notice board that displays messages sent from the user’s mobile.

When a user sends a message, it is received by a SIM inserted in GSM

modem at the receiver unit. The GSM modem interfaced with level shifter

IC to Microcontroller. The message received by the GSM is sent to the

microcontroller that further displays it on an electronic notice board

(Srikanthan, et al, 2018).

In the professional college campus, notices spring up from different

officers bringing reminders, warnings, advice, results, and appointments

to be placed on the notice board. As these notices are being placed on the

boards, some of the old notices are not removed and with time the notice

boards get filled up with relevant and irrelevant notice messages, as a

result of this, a person might not take caution of any new notice being

displayed as the person feels he cannot go through the stress of browsing

through the whole notice board searching for relevant notices. Apart from

that, at times the student would not know the apprising that has

occurred. Regular viewing is needed if he/she wants to know about the

events. But if the notice board includes 20 plus notices being displayed at
2

a time there are possibilities that students may not come across all of it

and some might miss few of them. It’s impossible to accommodate all the

info within the main notice board, therefore chances of displaying

department related information in the departmental notice board is high,

which again might remain unaware from student’s notice (Anushree S P,

et al (2014).

A.Meenachi and S.Kowsalya (2016), renowned that a lot of paper

has been used to convey messages at large and which is later wasted by

the organizations. This, in turn, leads to a lot of deforestation, thus,

leading to global warming. Small innovative steps in making use of

technology for regular purposes would have an adverse effect on the

environment issues which we are presently concerned about.

In addition, it is a datum that one way to disseminate information

is through bulletin boards and this is used in CEIS building, ASSCAT. A

certain officer or faculty staff will write the announcement in a paper and

post it in the announcement board which consumed time and resources.

Campus Display System through paper in CEIS building is a problem

especially to the students. One must flip it around to see announcements.

There are many students in CEIS and the CDS through paper is not really

noticeable to them. Announcements are made by papers so there’s a

possibility that it’ll be removed and vandalized.

There are many existing solutions to reduce the common problems

of CDS through paper not only in ASSCAT-CEIS building but also to the

other places by making or scheming Wireless E-Notice Board Using Wi-Fi

and Bluetooth Technology, Remotely Controlled Android Based Electronic

3

Notice Board and etc. With this, the researcher would propose a Campus

Display System that will utilize the distinct advantages of the Global

System for Mobile communication (GSM). One distinct advantage of the

system compared to the other system solutions is that one can post an

announcement anytime and anywhere to be displayed publicly through

text messaging by the use of GSM Module SIM900.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to design and build a GSM Based

Campus Display System to display notices of the college that can be made

at low cost integrating the expansiveness of a wireless cellular network

and the effortlessness of information transfer through the SMS with the

coverage of campus display boards.

Specifically, it aims to achieve the following:

1. To implement the system designed and developed;

2. To display date, time, temperature and information;

3. To determine the efficiency in displaying date, time, temperature

and information;

4. To determine the readability of the system; and

5. To perform cost analysis.

4

Significance of the Study

The GSM Based Campus Display System (CDS) will display flash

news or announcements to display on time. It is beneficial for the CEIS

faculty and staff, students, and to the future researchers.

To the CEIS Faculty and Staff, this will give easy facilitation to them in

posting information easily without writing in a paper. They can post

important notices anywhere and anytime.

To the students, this will help them be updated on the current news and

announcements of the College. Furthermore, this will encourage

them escalate the knowledge of designing and enhancing the

system to surface with a better and advanced project.

To the researchers, the study will broaden their knowledge about

application of wireless communication, Arduino programming and

interfacing.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The display is limited only for CEIS building. The scope of

information to be displayed will only comprise the CEIS updates. The

system will only accepts two valid senders. The CEIS Dean and the EISS

President will serve as the valid senders. The system will be using GSM

module sim 900 to receive and verify SMS coming from a valid sender.

Front of CEIS Room 105 is needed to place Campus Display System

(CDS).
5

Time and Place of the Study

The study on GSM Based Campus Display System will be con

ducted in the College of Engineering and Information Sciences, ASSCAT,

Bunawan, Agusan del Sur. It will start on January 2020 and it will be

finished on May 2020.

Operational Definition of Terms

GSM Module sim 900 is connected to a microcontroller. It will accept a

valid GSM network operator SIM card and act impartially like a

cellular phone with its own unique phone number. It can be used to

send or receive SMS from a valid sender.

Subscriber Identity Module is a regular chip-on card consisting of user’s

information. It is inserted in a slot available on the GSM Modem.

There are three sim cards needed in the project, the one that

inserted in the GSM Modem as the recipient and the two from the

CEIS Dean and EISS President.

WS2813B/Neopixel LED Strips an integrated light source that have been

integrated alongside a driver chip into a tiny surface-mount

package that is controlled through a single wire. For the system,

there will be two line displays. The first line LED display is 7 strips

high and 12 ft. long. It functions as the main view of the project to

display SMS or announcements from the CEIS Dean and EISS

President. The second line is 7 strips high and 4 ft. long to display

date, time and temperature.

6

Arduino Mega is a small computer on a single integrated circuit

containing a processor core, memory and programmable I/O

peripherals. It will process and verify the message sent from the

CEIS Dean and EISS President. Once the message is verified and

confirmed, the microcontroller will send it to the 12 ft. long Neopixel

LED to be displayed publicly.

Arduino Uno is an open source microcontroller board based on the

microchip ATmega328P microcontroller that is equipped with sets

of digital and analog input/output pins. In the system, it will be

programmed to display the date, time and temperature for the

second line Neopixel LED Display.

AM2320 Temperature and Humidity Sensor use capacitive humidity

sensor and a thermistor. In the study, it measures the

surrounding’s temperature to be displayed in the second line

Neopixel LED Display of the system.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

For increasing the lack of frequencies in the radiotelephone services

with the development of cellular networks in the 1970’s which in turn

lead to introduction of AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) where the

transmission was analog based. This was known to be the first generation

in cellular networks. The second generation in cellular networks was

based on digital transmission and was called with various abbreviations

as GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), ERMES (European

Radio Messaging System). Various Cordless telephone standards were

also introduced throughout this time only. The third generation has risen

with the unification of different technologies and some of them that are

popularly known are FPLMTS (Future Public Land Mobile

Telecommunications System), UMTS (Universal Mobile

Telecommunication System), and IMT2000 (International Mobile

Telecommunication. The Arduino hardware platform already has the

power and reset circuitry setup as well as circuitry to program and

communicate with USB. In addition, the I/O pins of the microcontroller

are typically already fed out to sockets/headers for easy access (This may

vary a bit with the specific model). On the software side, Arduino provides

a number of libraries to make programming the microcontroller easier.

More useful are things such as being able to set I/O pins to PWM at a

certain duty cycle using a single command or doing Serial

communication. The greatest advantage is having the hardware platform

set up already, especially the fact that it allows programming and serial
9

communication over USB. The word GSM Refers to Global System for

Mobile Communications. Nowadays many people are showing lot of

interest to know more about GSM related concepts. So, here we have

surveyed a list of various GSM based projects ideas which are having

more demand and very interesting to learn (Shukla, et al, March 2019).

In the work of , a multiuser SMS Based Wireless Electronic Notice

Board, the work is aimed at displaying notices in colleges on electronic

notice board by sending messages in form of SMS through mobile phone.

It is a wireless transmission system which has very fewer errors and

maintenance. When an authorized user sends a notice from his system, it

is received by Wi-Fi receiver. Wi-Fi is a popular technology that allows an

electronic device to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network,

including high-speed wireless connections. With the development of

cellular networks in the 1970’s for increasing the lack of frequencies in

Message displayed on LCD Screen using GSM and Bluetooth

Technology

In this paper a project model for electronic notice board is described

which uses two different technologies, GSM and Bluetooth for displaying

on LCD screen. Here the main part is Microcontroller 8051. The

microcontroller is interfaced with GSM Modem via MAX232 level

convertor. It is used to convert RS232 voltage levels to TTL voltage level

and vice versa. The hardware also has a 64K EEPROM. This EEPROM is

used to store the timings and messages to be displayed. While using

Bluetooth technology, Bluetooth modem fetches the message and sends it

forward to the display board (Shah, 2015).

Android Based Wireless Notice Board and Printer

This project deals about an advanced Hi-Tech wireless Notice

Board. This system is enhanced to display the latest information through

an Android application of smart phones or tablet. While user sends the

message from the Android application device, it is received and retrieved

by the Bluetooth device at the display unit. The Bluetooth access

password will only be known to the user, it is then sent to the

microcontroller that further displays the notice sent from the user on the

electronic notice board which is equipped with a LCD Monitor display. It

11

uses an Arduino system (AVR microcontroller) to control the operation.

Bluetooth wireless technology is becoming a popular standard in the

wireless technologies. “Wireless printers” refers to printers to printers in

which a radio frequency (RF) connects the printer to the network, a

controlling PC, a handheld computer or both (Kadam, et al, 2015).

GSM Based Wireless Notice Board

This paper describes the design and construction of E-notice board

using GSM technology. The system consists of four basic units: GSM

modem, Raspberry pi board, LCD monitor and Mobile device. The

operation of the system is centered on Raspberry Pi Board. The operation

of system is such that the notice which is to be displayed is send by the

mobile device to the GSM modem and displayed on the LCD monitor

using Raspberry Pi board. The system is based on real time process and

saves lot of resources i.e. human effort. The main objective of this paper is

to develop a wireless e-notice board that displays message sent from the

user and to design a simple, easy to install, user friendly system, user

friendly system. Wi-Fi provides higher data rates for multimedia access as

compared to Bluetooth which provides lower data transfer rates.

Bluetooth are intended for communication (about 10m), while Wi-Fi is

designed for WLAN about 100m (Joshi, et al, 2016).

12

Android Controlled Digital Notice Board

This paper presents a model about advanced wireless notice board.

The project is built around ARM controller, Raspberry-pi which is most

important in this system. Display is obtained on LCD monitor display.

Remote control is the most popular system nowadays. The main objective

of this project as described in the project is to develop a wireless notice

board which can receive and display message sent from the user. The

project aims at designing LCD monitor based message display controlled

form an Android mobile phone. The proposed system has a provision to

communicate from Android phone to LCD display board. Range of

communication is large. Android contains a full set of tools that have

been built from the ground up alongside the platform providing

developers with high productivity and deep insight into their applications

(Repe, et al, 2016).

Remotely Controlled Android Based Electronic Notice Board

This project is dealing with hitch wireless electronic notice board.

The main aim of the project is to have an electronic notice board where

the least information can be shorted by the faculty to the students using

Wi-Fi through connection terminal app. This message can be sent from

any Smart phone with Android OS upon GUI based on touch screen

operation. Here 8051 Microcontroller is used. As the Wi-Fi module has its

own IP address and port number that will be known only to the user the

system becomes more secure. When the user is sending the message from
13

android application device will be received by the Wi-Fi module. Along

with the notice messages, date and time, breaking news can be flashed

timely (Yakaiah, et al).

14

METHODOLOGY

Method to be used

The study will use developmental method which aims to design and

develop a GSM-Based Campus Display System in CEIS building. The

possible devices to be used are microcontroller, SIM cards and Neopixel

LED Strips to display flash news, announcements, date, time and

temperature simultaneously. The study will use GSM to make the system

better. A feedback system will be also applied in the study to determine

the efficiency of the system. Once an announcement is posted, the system

will send a confirmation text to the valid sender. Furthermore, it will also

utilize instruments using questionnaire to determine the readability of the

display. An economic analysis will also be performed in the study.

Sources of Data

The researcher will use temperature sensor as the primary source

for the temperature and RTC for the date and time to be displayed in the

second line of the Neopixel LED Display. For survey method, the

researcher will prepare questionnaire for the respondents. In performing

economic analysis, the basis will be the receipts of every purchase of

materials and equipment used in the study.

15

Data Gathering Instrument and Procedure

The instrument needed to gather data for Arduino code will be a

mobile phone or laptop connected to the internet. Once the researcher

gathered the data and encoded the Arduino code, it will then be executed

to the Arduino app in the PC or laptop and will be saved in the SD card

inserted in the microcontroller. In addition, the study will make use of

RTC and temperature sensor. The temperature sensor will monitor the

temperature of the environment and will be shown in the second line

display. All the data gathered will be stored in the two Arduino SD cards,

for the 12 ft. long scrolling message Neopixel LED Display in the first line

and for the 4 ft. long Neopixel LED Display for the date, time and

temperature. To determine the readability of the display, the survey

questionnaire will be the instrument to be used in gathering data from the

one hundred (100) randomly selected occupants of CEIS-ASSCAT. There

is a feedback system to determine the efficiency of the system in

displaying date, time, temperature and announcement.

Guidelines in Posting

of the display.

Treatment of Data

The data obtained from the accomplished questionnaire will be

classified, tallied and subjected to statistical analysis.

Also, the study will use slovin’s equation for the data gathered in

the evaluation of the study.

Formula that will be used in the Study

The formula used in the study to identify the power and energy of

the system are the following:

Power Output

P = V ×𝐼 where: P=Power
V=Voltage
I=Current
