INTRODUCTION

“Pythagoras” is used in many civil engineering applications such as designing roads, highways, rail
ways and also performing earth work calculations, creating survey maps, cross sections. Unlike
“SURFER” this is a software which the data can be entered only through importing Text files,
AutoCAD files, GIS files, GPS files and other relevant details useful in our work. After completing the
maps we can again export them to whatever the required format accordingly.

CREATING A TERRAIN MODEL

Importing a coordinate list (Text file) that contains all the data points (this is created using the data
obtained by performing surveying prior using software), the terrain modal can be created in the
following manner.
Selecting all these data points by the command Calculation | Terrain Model we can create the terrain.
By using the command Calculation | Remove boundary Triangle we can eliminate lines with certain
lengths from triangulation.
CREATING CONTOURS

By the command Calculation | Contours we can create contours, edit colors, set the initial and final
elevations, set contour interval etc. By the command Tool | Annotation we can label the contours with
their elevations.
EARTHWORK VOLUME CALCULATIONS

By using the command Calculation | Volumes we can calculate most appropriate elevation level to
perform the cut and fill operations effectively. It was chosen the mid-level of the contour levels and
performed the grid volume calculation by changing that mid value until the cut volume was almost
equal to fill volume. An example extract of such a calculation is shown below.
CREATING CROSS - SECTIONS

Another use of Pythagoras software is that we can create paths, polygons etc. in which we can create
paths and hence cross sections along the path as well as perpendicular to the path. For this we can use
the tools in the drawing tool bar.

By using the tool ‘create point’ we can set the points of the polygon and by using the tool ‘create
polygon’ we can create polygons of any number of points. By using the tool ‘create path’ we can
create paths in which we can create cross-sections.
By using the commands Calculation | Cross section along path and Calculation | Cross section
perpendicular to path we can set the scale, stepping, distances, number of cross sections needed etc.
relevant to the cross sections.

Changing co-ordinate system

We can switch the coordinate system of the data points from any local coordinate system to the global
coordinate system to give a more reasonable platform to work on. By using the command Calculation |
Transformation we can transform all the data points from the old coordinate system to a new
coordinate system.
