PART 1: Data & Analysis, Procedure, Materials and Conclusion
3. What happens when you make spring 3 “softer”: does the spring constant increase or decrease?
What about if you make it “harder”.
When the spring slide was adjusted to make it “softer”, the spring constant decreases.
Incidently, if the slider was to be adjusted to a higher option. The spring’s constant increases.
The spring constant is defined as the ratio of the force affecting the spring to the displacement.
This spring constant varies per spring depending on the material from which the spring is made
of.
Procedure:
1. After reading the instruction sheet, load the simulation software in the computer’s web
browser.
2. Adjust the slider and hang each labelled mass on each of the spring.
3. Record the data.

Conclusion:
In this simulation, three weights were tested on three springs (2 regualar springs and 1
customized spring) . After the experiment the data gathered and analyzed, primarily to determine the
spring’s constant. Based on the computations, the spring’s constant varied between 1,2 and 3. Number
3 was customized to a have a softer nature compared to one and two, because of this the spring
constant of three was lower compared to one and two that is both equal. A springs constant is solely
based on the nature of the material from which the spring is made, when the slider was adjusted to
make the third spring softer, this changed the nature of the spring causing it to decrease in value. The
same is to be concluded if it will be adjusted to harder.
In conclusion, the different weights applied to the spring if computed produces a steady spring constant
and changing the springs nature will also affect the springs constant.
