The top coat may also contain zine andor a- |uminum and include pigments for coloration (silver or black). Top coats may contain suitable additives for the adjustment of defined coefficients of friction. Passivation: Passivation is the creation of conversion coatings on newly deposited zine or zine alloy layers by treatment with suitable Cr(V}tree solutions ‘Sealing as defined by this DBL is the creation of an organic or inorganic protective coating with a layer thickness of approx. 0,5-2uum on zinc flake, zinc or zinc alloy coatings. The sealing on Zinc or zinc alloy surfaces is normally applied on passivated surfaces, whereby the sealing pe- Netrates into the passivation layer forming a composite coating. Depending on the sealing a- gent, the sealing shall be executed wet on wet or following intermediate drying, The sealing agent may be provided with pigments for coloration (black). Top coats or subsequent paint ap- plications with greater layer thicknesses shall not be used as sealings, ‘Sealings may incorporate suitable additives for the adjustment of the required defined coetfi- Gients of friction. The combination of sealings with integrated lubricants and subsequent lubri- cation should be avoided, if possible, Zinc flake coating: Essentially inorganic, thin coating with cathodic corrosion protection capability, characterized by the fact that zinc and, to a lesser extent, also aluminum flakes, are applied to the compo- nent from a dispersion. The coating constituents will evaporate and polymerize during the sub- Copyright Daimler AG 2010, DBL 9440, 2010-05 page 6 ‘sequent baking process. In order to achieve optimum corrosion protection, the coating shall normally be applied and baked at least twice Separate touch-resistant lubricant: AAlubricant which is applied in addition has the function of adjusting the total coefficient of fric- tion so that i ies within the range specified in Section 7, and -in line with MBN VDA 235-101 1997-07 - it shall not impair the component finish visually or chemically, and it shall be dry to touch, adhere well and shall not lead to any malfunctions in conveying and processing sys- tems. For further requirements with regard to applied lubricants, refer to MBN VDA 235-101 1997-07, Section 2.2. 5 Regulated substances and recyclability ‘All materials, procedures, processes, components, and systems shall conform to the current regulatory (governmental) requirements regarding regulated substances and recyclabilty; see Negative Substance Lst for the Selection of Materials according to DBL 8585 (or Mercedes-Benz Special Terms). Due to the detection problems associated with chromium (VI) in Cr(V1}-free zinc flake coatings, the appll- cation of chrome compounds for such coatings is not permitted. Detection of Cr(VI) Documented evidence of freedom from Cr(VI) shall be provided by the supplier, and it shall be done on the basis of acknowledged analytical methods. Such evidence shall normally be provided in accordance with DIN EN 15205 (formerly DIN 5093-1). Possible contamination is acceptable in accordance with the ‘exception currently provided from the EU ELV directive (2000/53/EC) up to a content of 0,1 % by weight relative to the corrosion protection coating (= "homogeneous range’); otherwise, the determination limit for Cr(VI) has been specified at 0,1 jag/cm* in accordance with DIN EN 15205 based on the interlabora- tory tests performed, 6 General properties and requirements The technical delivery conditions specified in the product standards, e.g. DIN EN ISO 898-1 shall apply, but with the restriction of a minimum tempering temperature for all screws and bolts of property class 10.9 of 425°C, To minimize mechanical damage to the thread during the coating of heavy screws and bolts, the thread of ‘screws and bolts > M14 is normally smoothed or re-rolled after coating. In order to reduce any risk of da- ‘mage, rack coating or other suitable gentle methods are alternatively possible for pretreatment and coat- ing. In the case of tests with thread ring gage, the dimensional stabilly of the test specimens is therefore still ‘deemed satisfactory ifthe thread ring gage can stil be screw-lightened, even if against resistance (tight- ening torque), but without other alds/tools, In the event of arbitration, DIN EN ISO 10883 specifies limit tightening torques for the testing of the trus- ness to gage. The gage measurement applies to the as-supplied condition. For zine flake coatings, in particular those with additional organic top coats, note that any material accu- ‘ulations on the bearing surfaces (e.g. underneath the bolt head) of threaded parts may lead to an unac- ceptable setting behavior. Such accumulations can therefore only be tolerated if no excessive negative Influence on the setting behavior is observed. No reliable limit values exist yet, but experience so far shows that a maximum value of 25 im still appears to be acceptable for material accumulations under the bearing surfaces of threaded parts. Uneven accumulations of coating materials on the surfaces of the threaded parts disturbing the tightening and functional properties and the conveying and feeding of the threaded parts to the fastening locations are not permitted, ‘Copyright Daimler AG 2010 DBL 9440, 2010-05 page 7 6.1 General requirements 6.1.1 Forthin-film phosphating, also refer to DBL $400.40 6.1.2 Forzinc flake coatings, also refer to DBL 8440 ‘When applying zinc flake coatings according to this DBL, DBL 8440, in particular section "6.3.1 Materials with strengths 2 1000 Nim” shall be observed. ‘The coater shall monitor and control the coating process with zinc flake coatings as well as the drying and baking process of such layers, in as far as possible, by continuous measurement of the process parame- ters. This includes, besides many other parameters, e.g, temperature measurements at the different pro- cess locations, measurement of the humidity during the drying processes of waterborne zinc flake coal- ings, as well as monitoring the viscosity of the coating liquids by means of appropriate measures, The supplier of the source material of the coatings (manufacturer of the treatment chemicals/coating ma- terials) is expected to introduce a system which, by means of regular audits of the users of the coating ‘materials (coaters), ensures the ability of the coaters to produce a high-grade and uniform coating quality inline with the requirements of the relevant specified DBL-PV. This shall be attested by the supplier of the source material of the coatings. In addition, the coating material manufacturer shall enable the coater to assess the stability of its sub- stances in practical use. Asimilar procedure is expected of the coater. Audits at the manufacturer of the treatment chemi ccals/coating materials shall verify the uniformity of the products used, improve communication between both sides and assist in developing a problem solving management system, In parts with cavities or recesses (¢.9. banjo bolts, nuts) or sections of parts (¢.g. driving recess of screws (bolts), accumulations of coating material detrimental to the operation of the part are not permitted. ‘An uneven coating thickness with the consequent less than perfect anticorrosion properties may restrict the application of zinc fiake coatings for threaded parts, e.g. in particular small nuts. The application of electroplated coatings in accordance with PV 9440.47 of this DBL should be preferred in this case. Ifa subsequent additional lubrication using a separate touch-resistant lubricant is intended on zinc flake Coatings and if sealing systems on zinc flake coatings are used, no integrated lubricants shall be used in these. 6.1.3 For electrodeposited coatings, also refer to DBL 8451 ‘When applying electrodeposited coatings according to this DBL, sections "6.2.2 Materials in strength ran- {ge 1000 N/mm up to 1150N/mm* and "6.2.3 Materials with strengths 21150NImm* of DBL 8451 shall be observed. The consequence is that for screws of property class 10.9 the material strength shall be restricted to 1160N/mm* max., and for material strengths =1000Nimm? appropriate heat treatments for hydrogen effu- sion shall be performed. 7 Coefficients of friction / connection behavior and finish treatment In accordance with MBN VDA 235-101: 1997-07, a total coefficient of friction of tot. = 0,08 to 0,14 (in accordance with MBN VDA 236-101: 1997-07) shall be set for all threaded parts, For similar parts with special configurations where a coefficient of friction cannot be determined, the finish treatment shall also be carried out in such a way that corresponding parts without the special configura- tion would achieve the relevant value range (e.g. for self-locking screws). Treatment in accordance with MBN VDA 235-101: 1997-07 for the product versions identified "with inte- grated lubricant" according to Annex C shall be performed by means of a lubricant integrated into the seal, The base layer shall be executed free from lubricants, Exception DBL 9440.40: {fin the case of parts = M8 with driving recess, the seal with integrated lubricant causes dimensional problems in the driving recess, the use of a lubricant is also permitted in place of the seal Copyright Daimler AG 2010 DBL 9440, 2010-05 page 8 For metric thread roliing screws (2.9. in accordance with MBN 10248) or all-metal prevailing torque nuts, an additonal lubrication treatment may be required to ensure thatthe permitted roling or clamping tor- ues ate maintained. This may also apply to drawing parts in specific assembly situations. When a coat structure or finish treatment in accordance with MBN VDA 235-101: 1997-07 is used for the first time, and during initial sampling, the supplier shall provide evidence that the product selected by him for setting the coefficient of friction range has the desired connection behavior (validation). This requires systematic examination in accordance with VDA Test Sheet 235-203 2005-08" Verschraubungsverhalten |[Reibungszahlen / Warmloseverhalten — Praxis- und montagegerechte Prifung* ("Connection behavior | Friction coefficients ~ Practice and assembly-oriented testing”) and submission of the examination results, ‘The geometry-relevant data for the geometry specified for sampling (e.g. thread size, underhead geome- tty) shall be submitted with the initial samples. Example: A sample of a screw M14*1,5°70 in accordance with MBN 10143 is submitted. The supplier is expected to enclose the validation results of a screw with thread dimension M14°1,5 in any optional length with comparable/similar underhead geometry. This may also be a screw in accordance with MBN 10108, for example. Records shall be retained and presented during a supplier audit. ‘An additional lubricant treatment on sealings / top coats with integrated lubricant shall be documented, resampled and approved. In these cases and for product versions marked with separate lubricant, a lubricant shall be used which creates a touch-resistant film and complies with the range of properties specified in VDA 235-101 Section 2.2. With the exception of PV .20 and PV .50, the lubricant shall be dyed bluish, and in the case of PV .89 greenish, and shall not possess any UV additives. 8 Technical data 8.1 Requirements ‘The corrosion resistance values specified in this DBL shall be attained on delivery to the relevant Mer- ‘cedes-Benz plants, Depending on the coating system and the geometry and dimensions of the fasteners, the corrosion resis- tance may significantly deteriorate as a resutt of handling, transportation and automatic sorting processes and feeding equipment. This applies to all surface versions, but in particular to zinc flake coatings. This requirement shall be given special attention during aucits For explanations and concrete notes relating to pertinent improvement measures on the process side, refer to the guidelines of the Deutscher Schraubenverband (German Fasteners Association) "BerticksI- cchtigung der Schutt- und Transportprozesse bei der Umstellung auf Cr (VI) freie Oberflachen’, edition April 2008, 8.1.1 Requirements for specific product groups 8.1.1.1 Nuts with plastic prevailing torque element For nuts with plastic prevailing torque element, generally only methods with baking temperatures of ap- prox. 200°C and plastics suitable for the application shall be used; if the plastic prevailing torque element is inserted after surface coating, the required corrosion resistance values shall be assured even following the crimping-in process. In this case and if temperature-sensitive plastic prevailing torque elements are Used, the examination of the use of product versions .47 is recommended as experience shows that the- se coat structures are not impaired as much by the crimping process. 8.1.1.2 Pipe connectors Zinc flake coatings on pipe connectors shall be applied only by companies for which the quality manage- ‘ment unit of the receiving plant has specifically granted an approval of procurement source. For pipe connectors with zinc flake coatings conveying air no loose particles or accumulations of the coat- ing material are permitted which could impair the functional availabilty of fine valves or boreholes within the system where the pipe connectors are used, For pipe connectors conveying liquid with electrodeposited coatings there are no internal corrosion pro- tection requirements. The manufacturer shall ensure, however, that the intemal areas are provided with Copyright Daimler AG 2010 DBL 9440, 2010-05 page 9 an adequate transport and storage protection so that corrosion-free delivery to Mercedes-Benz factories is ensured, 8.2 Tests and inspection For a description of acceptable coat structures, requirements and fields of application, see Annex C. The required corrosion protection properties shall be achieved for cases where separate lubricants are used both in the original condition and in degreased condition (e.g. using petroleum ether). The anti-corrosion coatings shall not demonstrate any blisters or peeling during the specified corrosion tests after the specified test period Corrosion testing as per DIN EN ISO 6270-2 shall be waived. Notwithstanding this stipulation, the sup- plier shall provide evidence at the time of initial use of a coat structure that the selected product/coat structure does not show any weaknesses with regard to this corrosion stress (system test / validation) The requirement is that the coating systems used in constant condensation water atmosphere prevent any base material corrosion for at least 720 h. 8.2.1 Adhesion test: zinc flake coatings in accordance with DBL 9440.40, DBL 9440.43 and DBL. 9440.89 To test the layer adhesion on the base material, an adhesive textile tape with an adhesive force of 7:1 N er 25 mm width shall be pressed on firmly by hand and then abruptly torn off at great speed vertically to the surface. The coating shall not peel off during this test. Small coating material components are permit- ted to adhere to the adhesive tape. 8.2.2 Adhesion test: zinc-nickel coatings in accordance with DBL 9440.47 To test the layer adhesion on the base material and between the layers, store test specimens for 30 min- Utes at 220 + 10 °C and quench them immediately afterwards in water at a temperature of 15 °C to 25 °C. No chipping and blistering of the layer(s) is allowed, 8.2.3 Adhesion test: zinc-nickel coatings with additional top coat in accordance with DBL 9440.49 Both tests according to 8.2.1 for the complete system and tests according to 8.2.2 to assess the adhesion of the top coat on the zinc-nickel coating are required here. 8.24 Zinc-nickel coatings with additional top coat (duplex layers) in accordance with DBL 9440.49 For these coating systems, the type of the additional coating and subsequent lubrication on the zinc- nickel base layers is optional, provided that systems are in place that significantly increase corrosion pro- tection even under mechanical loading of the fasteners compared to conventional passivation and seal- ings applied in electroplating plants. Note: The input required for the manufacture of the duplex corrosion protection systems specified for this PV, when tested in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9227 NSS, results in much longer potential periods until base material corrosion than the test periods of 1008h required in this DBL. Itis planned in the future also to define mechanical loads which have to be tolerated by these systems without negative effects on the corrosion resistance, 9 Samples Refer to DBL / Mercedes-Benz Special Terms ‘The following information regarding this DBL shall be indicated in the initial sample inspection report = Coater applying surface protection or subcontractors = Employed methods and applied coating materials, incl. product names = Results of corrosion tests + Company performing lubrication treatment, if applicable - Lubricants used, if applicable ~ Results of fiction coefficient test 41 tot.
