IDIOPHONE

What exactly is an idiophone?

The word means "self-sounding" and explains it all: It's the
instrument's whole body that resonates without the need of
attached membranes (that's a membranophone) or strings (a
chordophone). The idiophone naturally fascinates us: Like all
African percussion instruments, it has that rootsy sound, that
ancient look. There's an abuncance of fun hand percussion and
shaker percussion in Africa.
MEMBRANOPHONE

A membranophone is any musical instrument which

produces sound primarily by way of a vibrating stretched
membrane. It is one of the four main divisions of instruments in
the original Hornbostel-Sachs scheme of musical instrument
classification.
LAMELLOPHONES

Lamellaphone, any musical instrument consisting of a set of tuned metal

or bamboo tongues (lamellae) of varying length attached at one end to a
soundboard that often has a box or calabash resonator. Board-mounted
lamellaphones are often played inside gourds or bowls for
increased resonance, and the timbre may be modified by attaching
rattling devices to the board or resonator or by attaching metal cuffs at
the base of the tongues.
Chordophone

Chordophones are a family of instruments that use vibrating strings to

produce sound. The word is derived from the Greek 'chord,' meaning
string. In Western classical music, we often call this group the string
family.
Aerophone

Aerophone, any of a class of musical instruments in which a vibrating

mass of air produces the initial sound. The basic types
include woodwind, brass, and free-reed instruments, as well as
instruments that fall into none of these groups, such as the bull-
roarer and the siren. Bagpipes and organs are hybrids with different
kinds of pipes. The word aerophone replaces the term wind
instrument when an acoustically based classification is desired
