12th grade is when students start planning for which course to take for the next school

year. It is important to have a counselor who can help provide insights in the student’s decision

making. One vital part of the counseling process is ensuring that students take up courses that

match and suit their academic ability, interest, and goals. (Ivywise, 2015)

Planning course selection ahead of time helps students focus more on their interest and

designed field. It helps them choose courses which are aligned to their chosen strand. Without

prior planning, students might encounter hardships upon entering college. They should also put

in mind that their chosen strand in high school plays a role in course selection, because colleges

and universities have institutional needs. (Ivywise, 2015)

Incoming college students, particularly grade 12 senior high school students should have

prepared for the cost and academic challenges several years earlier. One of the aforementioned

factors is financial status. College tuitions are known to increase annually and this causes a

tremendous burden for both students and their parents. Due to this, a lot of families end up in

debt while some are deterred to pursue their chosen course. (Best colleges, 2019)

Aside from the financial factor, it is also known that parents play an active role in the

student’s college course selection. Parents should discuss the importance of higher education to

their children. They should discuss different career options to their child as early as possible to

help them have a wide array t choose from and to get a sense of possibilities that interests them

the most. (Best colleges, 2019)

According to the study of Butrimowicz (2017), it is important for students to plan their

course as early as possible for this might lead to bigger challenges in the future. Not being aware

of the factors and randomly just selecting a course without assessing your capabilities, intellect,

financial resources, etc. might lead students to more financial problems in the future. It is said in

her report that more than half a million of freshman students are not yet ready for college level

work. A high school diploma doesn't guarantee that students are prepared for college courses.

This leads to more financial burden to families because they have to get their child to attend

remedial courses.

While according to a study conducted by Harlow (2018), a student who does not create

an academic plan for college while in high school has a distinct disadvantage from those who

prepared. Some students end up not being able to enter college due to lack of preparation, and

those students who never attend college generally tend to earn much less than those who earned a

degree.
