CST TUTORIAL

INTRODUCTION:

Computer Simulation Technology is an Electromagnetic

Simulation Software. It offers accurate, efficient computational solutions for
electromagnetic design and analysis. Our 3D EM simulation software is user
friendly and enables you to choose the most appropriate method for the design and
optimization of devices operating in wide range of frequencies.

WINDOW DESCRIPTION:
Antenna Design:

To design an antenna the coordinates should be marked using

Graph Sheet.Designing an antenna in the CST software is based on the coordinates
of that antenna.

In this 3D window you can design the antenna structure. The

cube in the picture represents the maximum Field distribution of the antenna. The
axis in the centre is the main X and Y axis point which denotes that the antenna
should drawn in the four axis i.e.) –X axis,+X axis, -Y axis and +Y axis…

Before going into designing Process, the knowledge about the

panels in the CST is important.

VIEW

FILE:

In File panel the window displayed the recently used File and
also restorable files which is closed suddenly or unfortunately.

HOME:

In home window you can copy , paste , delete the structures to the clipboard.

In Units, you can change the default units of the antenna…

In problem type, we can change the type of problem as a high frequency , low
frequency, cable , thermal ,mechanics etc. For antenna designing High frequency is
set as default.

In setup solver , We can change the solver as time domain , frequency domain ,
eigen solver, multilayer solver etc.

Optimizer , Parametric sweep are the other simulation types in CST software.

Logfile is used to get the log file of the simulation.

In mesh we can see our antenna in mesh view and also we can change the mesh
settings also.

Other icons are the edit icon which is used in editing of the structure.

Modeling:

In modeling we can modeling the antenna using the following

icons.

Exchange i.e) Import/Export icon is used to exchange the model to other format
like gerber format. We can also view other format in these software by import that
format in these modeling session.

Using background we can set the background , we can get the materials we want in
the material library.

Shapes icons are used to create our model in the 3d window.

Using tools , we can edit our shape to the perfect shape andalso we can perform
boolean operations in our antennas. Using curves, we can change the curves of our
designed antennas.

Picks are used to select the place where our antenna feeds are to placed. By
selecting Pick face you can able to fix our picks in a face of our antenna.
Clear picks should be used whenever our antenna structure is modified.

Simulation:

In simulation window we can set the frequency of the antenna where

the analysis should be taken. But the field output frequency are not changed.

In source and loads , the source of the antenna are set and port of the
antenna how the input is going to feed are set. Load used in the antenna also set
using this lumped element.

Monitors are used to get the different field output of the antennas like
power loss/sar , e-field, far field, surface current etc.

Post Processing:

In post processing the extra calculations we can do other calculations

which can only processed after the simulation like s-parameter , vswr calculations
etc.
Import /export is used to get the readings of the measured results of
the antenna.

Other factors are also be measured. But for SAR calculations firat the
field monitors of power loss should be run. We can also measure the results in
Template based post processing where other post process for each type of
simulation is mentioned.

View:

Using Export image we can able to export our antenna or output as an

image.

We can also hide or show our working plane for image export. We
can also draw the dimensions of the antenna by double clicking the sides of the
structure…

Mouse control is used to zoom or pan our antenna and also we can
change the view of our antenna for antenna designing.

We can use the same mouse control in the bottom of the screen. No
need to change view option everytime.
Designing:

Designing the antenna is very easy in CST software…

Step-1:

Click the extrude shape in modeling. Then press Esc , anew window named
as extrude profile is opened as shown in the diagram.

In this profile name can be changed in the name which is going to

shown in the Navigation tree. We can change the orientaion of antenna as per our
need. Orientation is Z for normal antenna design.
Zmin is used if the antenna is placed above or below another material. Its
minimum height…

Height mentioned the thickness of the antenna.

In x , y Columns we can mention the coordinates of our antenna.

If the substrate or material wants to change you can change in the material and then
click [load from material library].

Then a new window is opened from which you can get all the materials substrate
bone muscle etc.
You can load whatever from these material library.

Simulation:

For simulation process the port should be placed after that the
field monitor is used to set other calculation needed.
Then Start simulation … It will take minimum 20 to 30 mins
after that the outputs are displayed in the navigation tree.

SAR calculation:

After the simulation in post processing SAR is calculated by just

clicking SAR… But before going into SAR calculation the simulation should be
run in power loss density / SAR field monitor.
