Tip 4

Decrease IV Processing Time

This tip is about how to make the processing time faster on the IV. There are 3 ways to shorten the processing time of the IV:
tool selection, not using Position Adjustment, and limiting the imaging area. Below there are 3 examples of tools and their
processing times with the Position Adjustment tool. Figure A is the Area (or Color/Area on color models) tool, Figure B is Edge
Pixels, and Figure C shows Outline.

Figure A Area tool, 49 ms Figure B Edge Pixels tool, 50 ms

Figure C Outline tool, 79 ms Figure D Area tool without Position Adjustment, 17 ms

As you can see, both the Area tool and Edge Pixels tool are substantially faster than Outline. The reason for this is that
Edge Pixels and Area only count pixels, whereas the Outline tool counts them and checks their position in relation to each other
to ensure that they’re in the right shape. The second way to reduce processing time is to not use Position Adjustment like in Figure D.

Tip 4: Decrease IV Processing Time

The Position Adjustment tool adds processing time for each other tool used. In this example, it added roughly 30 ms, but if you
use more tools, it will add more time. In high speed applications, try presenting parts in a more repeatable location and don’t use
Position Adjustment.

The last way to reduce processing time is to limit the imaging area of the IV. In a high speed application, if you can present parts in a
repeatable location, you can also limit the field of view to a smaller window. The example below (Figure E) shows the difference
between the full imaging area and a partial imaging area using the Edge Pixels tool.

Figure E Full (27 ms) versus small (13 ms) imaging area

Even if you can’t limit the imaging area as much as is shown above, you can still cut down the processing time by limiting the
area a little bit. If you have a process that requires a fast cycle time on the IV, remember the 3 big ways to keep processing time
down: tool selection, not using position adjustment, and limiting the imaging area.

Tip 5

Magnifying Lens Attachment

The topic of this tip how to detect extremely small targets. In this example, we have a multilayer capacitor chip that is about
0.6 mm × 0.3 mm. In Figure A, you can see just how small the target is.

Figure A Size of target

A part this small is usually very hard to detect. To get the most stable detection, you want the target to be large in the field of
view. Even for the IV detection without any attachments can be difficult. Figure B shows what the capacitor looks like with our
short range model IV-HG150MA without digital zoom, and Figure C shows how it looks with ×4 digital zoom.

Figure B No attachments, no zoom Figure C No attachments, ×4 zoom

Tip 5: Magnifying Lens Attachment

With digital zoom at ×4, the capacitor looks larger in the field of view, but we can do better. With the magnifying lens attachment
(OP-87902) for the IV-HG150MA and IV-G150MA in Figure D, we can get much larger images of the target. In Figure E, you can
see what the parts look like with the attachment and the ×4 zoom.

Figure D Attach OP-87902 to IV Figure E With OP-87902 and ×4 zoom

Using the magnifying lens and digital zoom, we can get a much larger image of a target. This can be very useful if detecting
objects that are extremely small. Don’t forget to try using the OP-87902 when detecting very small parts.

Tip 6

Detecting an LED

This tip is about how to detect whether an LED is on or off. If you use an IV with no attachments and Auto-Brightness, it’s very
difficult to see if the LED is on, like in Figure A below. The reason for this is that the light from the IV is too bright.

Figure A No attachments, Auto-Brightness

For detecting a light, there are two options: turn off the IV’s lighting or use a dome attachment with manual brightness
adjustment. If you turn of the IV’s lighting and use the Automatic Brightness adjustment, the exposure time will be increased and
the LED will be easy to see like in Figure B. Figure C shows what it looks like if you use a dome attachment instead and
manually decrease the brightness.

Figure B IV lighting off, Auto-Brightness Figure C Dome with manual brightness

If you need to detect whether or not a light is on, just remember these two options. Sometimes the light from the IV is too bright
to see LED targets, so it’s better to turn off the IV lighting or use the dome attachment.
