Preface

The field report “Report on the survey of local

vegetation of Kwatha and Moreh” describes more details
of the personal experience gained over and above the
knowledge obtained from the book , through far from
details study. The reports cover a few Botanical aspects
mainly of Kwatha . However, such type of studies can not
fulfill our aims and objectives so far as our source is based
on secondary sources.

The field study programmed was arranged and

conducted by department of Botany, Oriental college ,
Imphal under the guidance of the teachers of Botany.

So, I am very much thankful to our Botany teachers

and members for their co-operation and guide during the
study tour and while compiling the report.

Introduction
Kwatha is a Village in Tengnoupal Tehsil in Chandel
District of Manipur State , India. It is located 34KM
towards East from Dist. Head quarter Chandel. 18 Km

 Temple located in the village are sacred places of
worship.
 A tourist can experience the lifestyle of local people to
understand about their tradition, culture and history.

Aim and object

The main aim and object of the study tour is to
explore the rare specimens and study the various type of
soils and vegetation structure of different flora in a
particular area.
Only class room knowledge is not sufficient and less
mutual understandable to the student as it is merely based
on first hand book knowledge.
On the other hand “Practical aspect” is an expert one
for analytical knowledge. Therefore this type of study
highly includes the hand and good experiment. Student
should perform this experiment in the college laboratories
as well in the field also .
Study tour helps the students to understand the ecological
aspects of the place visited and the specimen which have
been collected.
In short, field visit is very essential part of the study of
this subject as a Botany student.

Importance of the study tour

Each & every body to secure perfect success in
life, study tour is of great significance, particularly in case
of botany.
Theoretical and practical classroom knowledge is
insufficient to know the subject thoroughly. So in order to
get adequate knowledge of the subject , as botany student
should not avoid this useful & should participate in the
purposeful & significant tour.
Such a tour not only helps to understand the place
but also about habit , habitat &ecological aspects of the
place & their relationship to the environment.
So, we should not miss such an important study
tour in future.

Site selection

The site selection was done by the expert teachers & some
members of the Botany Department .Kwatha and Moreh
was selected as the place for study tour for its richness in
natural vegetation.
Topography & climate of Manipur

Manipur is located in the extreme North-eastern border of

India. It is bounded by upper Burma on the east, on the
west by Cachar dist. Of Assam ,on the north by Nagaland
&on the south by chin hills of Burma & Mizoram . Being a
hilly region the state has a small oval shape plain at the
central part. The nature of soil varies from rocky to soft
literate, intermixed with rocks belonging to different
geological ages.
The central plain which is in oval shape is known as the
Imphal valley. The total valley area is about 2,238sq. km
only. Isolated hill & small winding ridges are scattered
throughout the valley. The Imphal valley is densely
populated through severely affected due to human
inference with vegetation and remains of earlier
vegetation observed even today. The top sequence of
valley has gently slope from north to south where the
lowest parts formed the lakes 7 ditches out of which is
LOKTAK is the largest.
The climate is pleasant , ranging from sub-tropical to
warm temperate in valley & warm to cool temperate in
hills. It is hot in summer, cold in winter.
Manipur is on the belt of south-west monsoon. It has
average rainfall of 200cm.
Requirements of study tour
The following equipments were carried for the
collection of the specimens:-

 Plastic/ Polythene Bags

 A sharp knife
 A pair of scissors
 Diary, note book &pencil
 Camera
 Extra paper

Vegetation
The vegetation is of mixed type. From the report, plants of
FABAECEAE family is more abundant followed by
POACEAE & ACANTHACEAE. Some plants families like
Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae, Acoraceae, Arecaceae, Moraceae,
Asteraceae are moderately found.

Conclusion

The place visited for the study tour being a

deserving site, we could see the representative of the
group of plants ranging from algae right up to angiosperm.
In the field we demonstrated how to go to the &
collect specimens. The importance of the field in natural
science, particularly in botany is tremendous & without it
the study of subject remains incomplete. Besides, the
consciousness of the existence of the plant kingdom
constituted from algae to angiosperm is made all the more
clear when they are seen in natural environment.
Whatever taught inside the class was seen vividly in their
respective habitats through the study tour.
At the end of the field study, I also learn the
concept of evolution in plants & the existence of plants
kingdom algae to angiosperm.
