Introduction
The professional nursing meeting that I attended was at the Virginia Department of Health

Professions, Virginia Board of Nursing, located at 9960 Mayland Drive, suite 300, Richmond

VA, 23233.
Background
The purpose of the professional meeting was to get the nurses and student nurses information

about the Virginia Board of Nursing and how it handles nursing cases. The purpose was also to

let the student nurses get the experience of seeing and hearing about rules and regulations

nursing practice while getting a live view of how current cases are handled. The agendas of the

meeting included hearings of cases of nursing licensure of RN’s, LPN’s, CNA’s and other

medical profession. The attendees included the licensure individuals being investigated for the

problems that they did at work and audiences that included student nurses and other license

professional. Issues such as diverting medications, not working under the scope of practice and

working with a suspended license.

Noticing
Initially I noticed that there were a lot of attendees going to this meeting that were students

and there wasn’t that many panel of Board Members. One of the Board Member was a physician

and a few members were registered nurses and some were not nurses. During the meeting, I

noticed that two of the people that was supposed to attend their hearing did not show up. One

person had a representative to represent her because she lived four hours away and had car

problems so the representative asked for a hearing extension. The third person did show up for

their hearing for the morning. I was able to hear the case and the person trying to defend

themselves of wrong doing. This person answered every question the board members asked and

answer professionally. The investigator in this case asked a lot of the same question of the person

that was being investigated.

Interpreting
The information that was discussed in the case that was being heard by the board members

was a case about a registered medication aid diverting controlled medication with errors in

documentation. While I was listening to the investigator speak about the case and the person

accusing the defendant, I thought what a terrible situation to be in. I thought to myself, I don’t

want to ever be in that situation, having to sit in front of a panel of board members pointing

fingers at you. I have heard about going to the board of nursing by previous students and hearing

from instructors about situations where nurses can end up going to the board of nursing and

having their license revoked if they committed a crime. I have never been to an experienced like

this but have only heard of it and possibly read it somewhere.

Responding
The stress that I experienced from this experience was wondering if the accused person was

going to have their license revoked or not. I also felt like a victim because the person being

accused only represented themselves. There was no other witnesses to help out while at the same

time there where investigators and board members one by one questioning you making you feel

like you are in front of a firing squad. The role that I would take in this situation is the unit

manager with a lot of knowledge of staff and policies and procedures. I’m not sure what

subcommittee is available the I can participate in right now but maybe when I become a

registered nurse, I can look into it.

Reflection on Action and Clinical Learning

Professional nursing meetings can bring forth a lot of information regarding new policies and

procedures regarding the nursing. Also, nursing support groups to new and current nurses. The

value of professional nursing meeting can help new graduate nurses gain information that he or

she does not know. Professional nursing meetings help keep nurses up to date with health care

system changes and how nurses can keep up with changes. Written evidence in the Quality and

Safety Education for Nurses journal states with continual education and safe practices in nursing

can help nurses provide better patient outcomes with evidenced based practiced. This includes

reporting medical errors.
