A Film Critique in English For Academic and Professional Purposes
Wirkola, written by Max Botkin and Kerry Williamson starring Naomi Rapace, Glenn Close, and
Willem Dafoe. Released way back August 18, 2017 in the United States. This movie has a
comparison to the film Orphan Black, which is the lead actress, Tatiana Maslany plays identical
clones. In this movie, where families are allowed only one child due to overpopulation,
resourceful identical septuplets must avoid governmental execution and dangerous in fighting
while investigating the disappearance of one of their own. 2073, the year where the world is in
crisis, to prevent overpopulation, a politician named Nicollete Cayman created the “Child
Allocation Act”. It restricts parents to have only one child in their family.
Max Botkin and Kerry Williamson; the writers, injected a futuristic theme to the said film.
Narrowing the future, overpopulation may lead as one of the main problems of every country.
According to the Internet World Stats, China has the most number of population containing to
its’ country itself. As of 2019, there are 1,420,062,002 individuals living in the said country.
With the ideas of the writers and the greatness of the director, including Naomi Rapace, the main
character, they created such a relatable film for everyone. What Happened to Monday is such an
impeccable creation, together with the great acting skills by the lead characters, an exceptional
story plot and the main actress, Naomi, played 7 roles for the film, which is truly amazing. The
movie takes the serious real world issue of overpopulation against the intrinsic human
imperative. The movie also made us think about our current situation. It makes us wonder how
far did the human society will go, and when will technology starts to really become more
advanced.
In the end, What Happened to Monday feels like a film created from within. The eccentricity of
the creative process knows no limits. This film requires more than just a strong visual effects, but
also a great performance. I would definitely recommend this movie for everyone. This film is not
created only for entertainment, it is also advocating about the social issues that some countries
are facing right now. One of the moral of this film is the bond within the family, siblings to be
exact. It is very important to have a good relationship between you and to your family. All in all,
this movie is a worth to watch, especially for those who loves action films.
