Q1

A tank holds 100 gal of a water-salt solution in which 4.0 lb of salt are dissolved. Water runs into

the tank at the rate of 5 gal/min and salt solution overflows at the same rate. If the mixing in the tank

is adequate to keep the concentration of salt in the tank uniform at all times, how much salt is in the

tank at the end of 50 min? Assume that the density of the salt solution is essentially the same as that

of water.

Q2

A tank contains 1000 kg of water. The input in the tank is 100 kg/min and output from the tank is 90
kg/min. After 50 min how much mass of water is present in the tank.

Q3

A tank contains 1000 kg of water. The input in the tank is 90 kg/min and output from the tank is 100
kg/min. After 50 min how much mass of water is present in the tank.

Q4

A tank contains 2 m3 of water. A stream of brine containing 20 kg/m3 of salt is fed to tank at 0.02 m3/s.
Liquid flows from tank at rate of 0.01 m3/s. if the tank is well agitated, what is salt concentration in the
tank when the tank contains 4 m3 of brine.

An equilibrium still is purifying benzene and toluene from a small amount of essentially non-volatile
impurity and is initially charged with 20 lbmoles of feed stoke of composition xF =0.32 mole fraction
benzene. Feed is supplied at the rate of 10 lbmol/hr, and the heat input is adjused so that the total
moles of liquid in the still remains constant at 20. Estimate the time required for the composition of
overhad product YD to fall to 0.4 mole fraction benzene. No liquid stock is removed from the still during
this period.
2.48𝑥𝑤
YD = 1+1.48𝑥𝑤

Q5

Suppose that you have two tanks in series, as diagrammed in Figure P17.12. The volume

of liquid in each tank remains constant because of the design of the overflow lines. Assume that each
tank is filled with a solution containing 10 lb of A, and that each tank contains 100

gal of aqueous solution of A. If freshwater enters at the rate of 10 gal/hr, what is the

concentration of A in each tank at the end of 3 hr? Assume complete mixing in each tank and

ignore any change of volume with concentration.

Q6

A sewage disposal plant has a big concrete holding tank of 100,000 gal capacity. It is three-fourths full of
liquid to start with and contains 60,000 lb of organic material in suspension. Water runs into the holding
tank at the rate of 20,000 gal/hr and the solution leaves at the rate of 15,000 gal/hr. How much organic
material is in the tank at the end of 3 hr?

Q7

Consider the concentrated extraction of benzyl acetate from a mixture of benzyl acetate and toluene
using water as the extracting solvent. Both streams (acidic mixture and water) are fed into tank where
they are stirred efficiently and mixture is then pumped into 2nd tank where it is allowed to settle into
two layers. The upper organic phase and the lower aqueous phase are removed separately and the
problem is to determine what proportion of acid has passed into the solvent phase.
