Lesson Plan for Tuesdays

Goal 1: Student will be able to identify the features of nonfiction texts and use the asking questions,
making connections, and clarify strategies in the story.

Lesson Plan

Objective: By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to recognize the features of a nonfiction
text by examining if there is a table of contents, captions, diagrams, glossary, etc. as well as asking
questions about important ideas before, during, and after the story while making connections and
clarifying.

Procedures:

 Discuss what nonfiction texts are and what characteristics make a text non-fiction as well as how
many elements can make up a non-fiction book that fiction or other books do not.
 Student will read, Birds, Freaky Facts about Spiders, and From Seed to Sunflower
 Encourage student to recognize how each of these stories are set up in the same order starting
with a title page and then table of contents. Also, encourage the student to identify information
that they may already know about each book topic.
 Student will use the strategy questioning, making connections, and clarify to learn about
important details in the story, clear up any confusion, and bring together background
knowledge to the texts that are being read.

Closure: Student will complete the non-fiction features scavenger hunt for the book Birds by finding
specific elements that a non-fiction book has that was discussed today. The student will also use the
sticky note graphic organizer to come up with before, during, and after questions for the book Freaky
Facts about Spiders which will then be discussed. Then the student will use the text messaging activity
sheet to write important details from certain pages or sections of the book From Seed to Sunflower on
one of the cell phones on the activity sheet. The other cell phone will have a picture which will describe
what the text message in the previous phone is saying.

 Non-fiction Features Scavenger Hunt
 Sticky Note graphic organizer
 Text Messaging activity sheet
 Coloring and writing utensils
