Corn Commodity Survey Work Plan
CY 2018
Project Management : Aklan Provincial ICT Office and Office of the Provincial Agriculturist
Project Title : Geotagging of Corn Area
Project Coordinator : Ronelo S. Salaver
Project Site : Mun. of Kalibo, Aklan
Project Area : 138.5 hectares
Project Duration : One Year (January 2018 – December 2018)
1) RATIONALE
Agriculture is the base of the provincial economy of Aklan despite phenomenal upward
developments in the province’s tourism industry because of Boracay. Agriculture is still the anchor
sector in the provincial economy contributing the highest percentage to the gross provincial product.
Despite of bad weather, economic crises, the calamities and effect of climate change which ravaged the
province, Aklan’s total rice production in 2013 increased to 113,465.29 metric tons produced from an
area of 34,015 hectares of ricelands.
On the other hand, corn production in Aklan inched up by 11 percent from 2, 431 metric tons in
2015 to 2, 688 metric tons in 2016. Yield per 3 for almost 2 percent of Western Visayas production with
154,000 MT. Of the two types of corn, yellow corn has the highest production with 78 percent (2, 090
MT), while white corn comprised 22 percent (598MT). White corns are used primarily for human
consumption, while yellow corns are used generally as feed grains. The area harvested for corn in 2016
was estimated at 1, 262 hectares, or 8 percent higher compared to 1, 172 hectares reported in 2015.
It is only logical that Aklan has to continue modernizing the agriculture sector which will have certain
effects on the income and sources of livelihood of farmers
2) OBJECTIVES
This project will provide the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office VI, Office of the
Provincial Agriculturist of Aklan, Municipal Agricultural Office concerned, and farmer beneficiaries, with
information regarding the actual location of the land planted with corn. This survey will gather data to
determine the variety of corn planted as well as the status of the target pests and diseases that can
reduce the quality and quantity. This information can be used to determine approriate response actions
if positive finds are confirmed and for continuous support under the Corn Program by OPA.
The ability to continue to support Aklan Corn Program for the success of province grain
industry.
Reduction to the risk of economic hardship to the grain producers.
Additional geographic assessment of data gathered.
Identification, if present, of:
Pests - Brown Planthopper, Green Leafhopper and Asian Corn Borer
Diseases – Downy Mildew, Corn Smut and Bacterial Stalk Rot
Presence/absence data entered into the Agriculture Information System (AIS) data base.
4) APPROACH
