Guidelines for Universal Precautions and OSHA Compliance in Community Midwifery Practice
1. Definition or Key Clinical Information: Universal precautions are protocols that help prevent the spread
of infection in healthcare settings. They are based on the principle that all blood, body fluids, secretions,
excretions except sweat, non-intact skin, and mucous membranes may contain transmissible infectious agents.
They are to be applied during all in-person client interactions.
