Engr. RJ Lawrence Tiu

Instructor
Objectives
1. To be able to construct a flat back pattern.

2. To be familiarized with the basic hand tools.

3. To Enhance the creativity and technical knowledge of the students in

wood-working practice.

4. To test the student’s comprehension and skills in making a one-piece

pattern (flat back)

List of Materials
1. Files – these are the tools used for shaping and forming the wooden piece into the desired
shape and edge with particular smoothing.

2. Try Square – these tool is used to measure in inches and in pieces of wood especially in
woodworking and this tool is also accurate in measuring an angle or 90 degrees .
3. Back Saw- The type of saw used to make straight cuts and basically contain a metal
stiffening rib on top to provide precise cuts.

4. Compass Saw- This particular type of saw is used to make precise and small cuts , in this
particular experiment we used this after drilling the hole on the inside part of the wood in
order to cut and form the hole.

5. Electric Drill Press- This machine is used to make holes on wood and you should be
knowledgeable with the type of bit to use in order to have good results.
6. Sand Paper- We used this tool or material to have a smooth and fine finish on the wood in
the experiment.

1 1
7. 1 piece solid wood (5’’ x 22’’ x 2’’)- This material is the main object in our experiment
and it is the one to be modified to form the desired specifications that the instructor has
given to us.

8. Wood Chisel-This tool is used to give make shapes and cuts to carve the wood to make
its form to help shape and precisely cut the wood.
9. Wood Plane-This tool is used to enhance the surface wood and by using it the wood will
make a smooth edge and to have a smooth surface on it.

Procedures
1. Draw a flatback figure

2. First is to make an outline on the first side of the wooden block, mark the sides to be
tapered, to be cut and to be drilled.
3. Using the backsaw, cut the excess wood on the sides that is needed to be removed.

4. After cutting the sides, go to the electric drill press along with the laboratory assistant and listen
to the instructions while executing the drill operation.
5. With the holes present in the wood, use the compass saw and make necessary cuts in the inner
part of the block.

6. After cutting the inner portion of the block, use the files to precisely smoothen the edges and
sides of the block in order to form its desired figure and shape.

7. After filing and smoothing the edges and the inner portion of the wood, we used the sandpaper
to give more smoothness and to polish the wood in order to give more accurate and successful
results.
Topic Questions & Answers
1. What are the different types of patterns?
 Single piece Pattern
 Match plate Pattern
 Cope and Drag Pattern
 Lagged-up Pattern
 Built up Pattern
 Multi-piece pattern
 Gated Pattern
 Sweep Pattern
 Skeleton Pattern
 Shell Pattern
 Loose Pattern
 Piece Pattern
 Left and Right Hand
 Follow Board Pattern
 Segmental Pattern

2. Is knowledge of engineering materials significant in pattern making? Why?

 Having ideas about materials in engineering is very important because it gives us the
knowledge in working with a specific pattern effectively and also to wisely spend time
and the work done by the worker in doing the given task.

3. What is a quality of a good pattern?

 A quality of a good pattern should reflect and meet the standards and the results of the
work done with the output must be perfect with the correct and precise measurements.

4. What is the purpose of a working drawing?

 A working drawing is very important in working because it shows what things are needed
to be accomplished and it guides us while doing the work to avoid errors during the
process.

5. What properties of wood that makes it a good material for pattern making?

 The wood should be durable and strong

 Environment friendly material
 Easy to find in the market
 Easy to operate during the operation
6. What other material can be used as a pattern material?

 Materials are considered and used as pattern materials are materials that can be
modified by shape and formed, it should be solid because it will be molded.Examples of
which is metals, plaster, wax and plastics because they can be modified and can be formed
specifically by melting.

7. What kind of wood is suitable for pattern making?

 Woods like deodar, teak, yellow pine, and mahogany are the kinds of woods
suitable for making patterns because its quality can sustain the strength of wear and tear of
work.

8. Why should the pattern made to be bigger than the finished product?

 The pattern made should be really bigger than the finished product because there
should be an allowance with the object and because to have the precise size and having an
allowance would have a chance to correct the errors and make the finished product perfect
after polishing.

9. Why is there a need to incline a little bit the side of the pattern?

 Because it would be easier to modify the mold from the sand and its function is to
let the worker remove the mold freely without damaging the object.

10. What are the advantages of a metal pattern?

 The advantages of a metal pattern than wood pattern is the strength of metal and it
has a higher quality and it has a good finish than to a wood pattern.

Conclusion

 In this experiment, I can conclude that in making a one piece pattern should be precise
with the actions, measurements and tools to use and should observe care while using saws
like the compass saw and the backsaw and the most important is towear proper protective
equipment to avoid injuries and problems.
