It is a love song sung to an audience of one. Its the first melody a child hears. It belongs to the parent and can be identified with the history of its people, Words are changed and new words added with each generation. The lullaby is beautiful in its simplicity. It needs no words, as the baby doesn’t understand them. ‘They have meaning to the parent. The soothing, gentle sounds are all the baby needs. Enjoy... Go to sleep, little one.” This is a lullaby of the Illongo Visayans who live on the island of Panay and the sinaller islands nearby. The official language is Tagalog, and it belongs to the Malay-Polynesian family of languages. It is written in the Latin alphabet and has no accents. Korean folk music characteristically depicts toil and hardships, as well as a feeling of thanksgiving and hope. Korean culture has been heavily influenced by Chinese customs, but maintains an individuality of its own. The music of Korea is mainly based on the pentatonic scale and is usually in triple meter. Ahrirang is a well-known folk song from Korea that speaks of Abrirang Hill, outside of Seoul. It is said that Abrirang Hill is a symbol of personal contentment and triumph. This arrangement attempts to capture the style of Korean music, which is highly personal and tender, with sentiments of love and peace, It also seeks to illustrate the contrast between Korean and Western musical styles. The middle section with piano only is purposely arranged with common Western chords and harmonies. It should be sung as smoothly and harmonically full as possible to draw attention to the marked differentiation fom the stark and chordal nature of Korean music.
