LATE PROJECTS WILL NOT BE TAKEN

In today's climate of growing energy needs and increasing environmental concerns,

alternatives to the use of non-renewable and polluting fossil fuels is investigated. Steam
power stations are known by using coal as the primary source of energy and in some
countries nuclear energy is used. There are other sources of energy that are used for
generating electricity (like solar, wind, tidal waves, and so on). There is a growing
investigation and reviews on harvesting solar energy from the sun. There are solar farms
in some areas in South Africa, some universities have research centres on Solar Energy.

CONTEXT: Coal fired power stations in South Africa.

This week the world is discussing climate change, fossil fuels are seen as culprits.

The Problem is to conduct literature review (academic/scientific) on the harvesting,

storage, retrieving of solar energy and application towards steam generation that can be
used in power stations

The aim of the project is to: The purpose of this project is to conduct a literature review
in harvesting and storing solar energy. The researcher should also focus on the application
of solar energy with emphasis on how solar energy can be used in steam generation.

The research should include but not limited to the following:

 Storage of thermal energy.

 Phase change materials.
 Retrieving stored thermal energy.

1
The Research Question: What does academic and scientific literature say about solar
energy as the alternative source of energy, its harvesting, storage and application
including use to generate electricity in power stations?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS (Turn these into questions – what does literature say
about…..):
1. Renewable and non-renewable sources of energy;
2. Use of coal in power generation
3. Other useful sources of energy;
4. Solar energy – harvesting, storage, application

CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE – what is the contribution of your project to

scientific knowledge as far as solar energy as the alternative source.

HOW TO WRITE A CHAPTER

CHAPTER 2 (LITERATURE REVIEW)

2.1 Introduction – Make a summary of what you are discussing in this chapter)

The last paragraph might read as follows:

In the next section I am going to discuss sources of energy.

2.2 Sources of Energy (there are renewable and non-renewable sources…….)

In the next section I will discuss renewable energy

2.2.1 Renewable Energy

2.2.2.1 Windy

2.2.2 Non-renewable enrgy

2.2.2.1 Coal
2.2.2.2 Nuclear

At the end of the chapter is the heading summary, where you summarise the
whole chapter, very close to the Introduction
