Procedure:
Before commencing the earth work the Toe limits of Embankment shall be marked.
If the area has thick vegetation/ roots/ trees, a crawler or pneumatic tires dozer may be
used of adequate capacity and shall have ripper attachments for removal of tree stumps
and clearance purpose.
All the vegetation such as roots, under growth, grass and other deleterious matter
unsuitable for incorporation in the embankment/ sub-grade shall be removed between
fill lines and disposed off.
The original ground shall be levelled, scarified, mixed with water and compacted to
achieve 95 % of lab MDD.
The P o n d a s h for the Embankment shall reach the site from the nearest approved Power
plant.
Pond ash is typically delivered to site in covered truck dumpers to minimize the loss of
moisture and dust.
The Pond ash embankment should be covered with soil on sides and top to prevent the
erosion of ash.
EARTH COVER REQUIREMENT:
1.Good earth suitable for embankment construction can be adopted as a cover material for
Pond ash embankments.
2. Soil used for cover of Pond ash embankment should have minimum dry density of
1.52gm/cc
when the height Pond Ash embankment is up to 3m and in areas not subjected to excessive
Flooding in other cases the dry density of cover soil should be greater than 1.6 gm/cc.
3. Plasticity of cover soil should be between 5 to 9%.
4. Expansive soil should not be used for construction of cover.
5. The thickness of side cover (measured horizontally) typically in the range of 1M to 3M.
6. Height and slope of embankment will govern the thickness of earth cover, However for
Embankment up to 3m height earth cover of 1M is sufficient.
Pond ash Embankment with intermediate soil layers to be constructed if the height of
embankment is greater than 3m.
The dumped Pond ash along with 1m side cover should be spread in
uniform thickness by means of Graders/mechanical means to achieve
specified slopes and grades.
Clods and hard lumps in soil cover will be broken to a maximum size of 50 mm for
embankment.

If the moisture content (NMC) is less than OMC, the water shall be added by
sprinkling considering evaporation losses, so that at the time of compaction it is
in the range of 1% above to 2% below the optimum moisture content.
I
Each layer of Pond ash embankment to be compacted thoroughly to the specified density.
When vibratory roller is adopted for compaction two passes without vibration to be followed
5 to 8 passes with vibration would be sufficient to compact individual layers.
The Construction of pond ash and earth cover on sides should proceed simultaneously.
The rolling shall commence from lower edge and proceeded towards upper edge.
Each pass of roller shall overlap 1/3rd of the preceding pass.
Acceptance Criteria:
Field Dry Density Shall be greater than 95% of MDD
Optimum moisture content shall be +2% to -2% during the time of compaction.
Risk:s
Machinery Incident
Dust Pollution
Manpower Harm
Overhead electrical Hazard
Safety Measures:
All tippers, tankers graders etc. will be provided with reverse horns etc.
All exit points of the trucks/ tippers on Road will be marked.
Flagman will be provided at all exit points on the road of the trucks /tippers if required.
The speed of vehicles plying in the work will be restricted to 20 kmph maximum.
Any local skilled skilled labour if working in the job will be screened and trained.
Adequate area lighting in case of night work will be ensured.
Proper PPEs viz. Shoes, Safety Jackets etc. will be used.
Water sprinkling, when it is necessary for dust separation.
Strict and experienced supervision.
No work allowed under the live electric line except the movement of vehicle.
Signage board will be fixed before the electric line if vehicle movement will be there.
Supervision will be mandatory wherever live electric line near by the working area.

Description Remarks
N s
1 Do the on-site borrow materials match the descriptions given in
the geotechnical report?

been performed?
4 Is the foundation free of water?
5 Are loose lift thicknesses as specified and are they
approximately horizontal?
6 Is the embankment surface approximately horizontal but sloped
for drainage?
7 Is the moisture-density of the compacted fill as specified?
8 Are field density tests accurately referenced to project baseline
or centerline?
