METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the following discussion provides an overview of the methods,

approaches and its instruments used in the gathering of data for accurate data analysis
and interpretation.

I. Research Design
The research relies on data that is gathered both quantitatively and
qualitatively from national and local government units, along with data from
professionals and other experts in the field of climate monitoring and socialize
housing which is essential to the design and development of this study hence
follows a conclusive research design.

II. Site Justification

Through the city’s future vision and various housing project proposals,
the researchers were able to determine which residential area in Manila that
contained the oldest government socialized housing that is built with aging
architectural elements due to its long-term occupancy. With the existence of an
aging socialized housing in the area was a factor to conclude the need for a
redevelopment of a new socialized housing.

III. Developmental Controls

The study focuses on the architectural standards of a socialized
housing in order to create an ideal environment for its residents provided by
the National Housing Authority Design Manual on standard housing models.
The Presidential Decree No. 1096 or the National Building Code of the
Philippines and Republic Act No. 9514 or the Fire Code of the Philippines are
to be considered during the planning and design process. House Bill 7373 or
the Green Building Act will be considered as part of the researchers aim to
promote a sustainable design.

IV. Sources of Data

A. Primary Data
Data gathering will be accomplished through conducting
several in-depth interviews with related professionals in regards to the
research topic, bioclimatic architecture and socialized housing, such as
climatologist, environmental planner, architects in the field of housing
protocols, and associated offices of the local government concerning
the research. Furthermore, this will act as a guide for the researchers' to
analyze the data gathered and influence the design solution henceforth.
Conducting a survey for the home owners is applicable to
obtain data regarding comfort under the physical conditions. While the
numeric data about climate conditions such as rainfall, precipitation,
temperature, relative humidity and wind effects will be provided by the
local meteorological station which is PAG-ASA. This will determine
the effect of the climate quantitatively in the existing housing building.
Conducting site visits are also essential to determine the basic
components of the site and its vicinity. The researchers will conduct
on-site observations to thoroughly evaluate the chosen site to prove its
feasibility and check its existing physical conditions for the purposive
output that could be beneficial to the end-users.

B. Secondary Data
To generate ideas, hypotheses and gain insights pertinent to the
study, the researchers gathered data from various related literature such
as books, research journals, reviews, newspaper, and general websites.
Here, the researchers could be able to generate research method
alternatives and be informed to any potential difficulties.

V. Research Instruments
There are several tools to obtain qualitative data in a conclusive
research design. One of which is acquiring climatological data in PAGASA
and will be translated later into a bioclimatic chart. By plotting the said
accumulated data, evaluation and analyzation to determine the requirements
and solutions will follow along with the calculative methods. For the home

owners, a survey will be conducted showing a range or rubric prepared by the

researchers as a guide to obtain a factual response regarding the homeowners
comfort. This will avoid unnecessary and unrelated answers to prevent a low
rate of accumulated factual answers. Another one is conducting an in-depth
interview with related professional specialized in bioclimatology and
socialized housing, and government agency heads to acquire insights that
could affect the research. It will serve as a supporting data regarding the
research. An open-ended interview is applicable to acquire relevant answers
from the respondent. The researchers will follow a semi-restrictive format to
spontaneously gather basic factual data along with the general outline of
questions prepared beforehand. During site visits, on-site observations will be
recorded to be used for further inspection and analyzation of the current state
of the existing housing building and later on be used before applying the final
architectural solutions and recommendations. Here, researchers will be able to
determine the design parameters with current state of the housing building.

VI. Validation of Instruments

Instrument: In-depth interviews and Survey
Aim: Obtain data focused on user’s concerns
Target: Homeowners and related professionals on climatology and socialized
housing
Homeowners of the Paco Bagong Lipunan Condominium Association are the
proponents of the study wherein their concerns are essential during the
development stage of the design intervention. Along with the insights and
experiences of the people with expertise in bioclimatic design or related
studies involving climate and socialized housing. The researchers intend to
conduct interviews that will help gather the end-user’s comfort in terms of
physical condition and related to the surrounding of human comfort that is
identified to be vital. These supporting data will guide the researchers to
determine the applicable methods to be used to attain the feasibility of the
study. In the survey, a range or level of comfortability rate will be answered by
the respondents based on their experience. It will show the average results and
be analyzed by the researchers. These data will be the primary basis for the
design filling the respective requirements.

Instrument: Site visit and on-site observations

Aim: Gather essential data within the site
Target: Paco Bagong Lipunan Condominium
Assessment of the present condition of the site will help to develop the
architectural solutions and future recommendations formed through the study.
The existing elements and other components within the building will be
recorded. Furthermore, on-site observation is a vital data for researchers to see
what to expect from the data gathered and what is to be applied to the housing
building by understanding its components.

VII. Data Gathering Process

Adapting the Conclusive design approach for the research, the
preliminary method for data collection is through general sources of
information such as books, articles, thesis, and recent studies. These sources
will help the proponents in conducting a background research about the
identified problem of the study. It will also help in generating additional
information to further understand the primary context of the research. The
second procedure for the data gathering is the site visit and on-site
observations. It is necessary that the proponents will be knowledgeable to the
present condition of the site since the whole project design will depend on the
different considerations existing on the site. Thirdly, in-depth interviews will
also be conducted to the homeowners’ association of the housing building and
also to the professionals and specialists related to the research study.
Furthermore, certain technical measures regarding the lot are required to be
collected to be used in the new design that will be proposed after conducting
the study.
As the primary data that will be used for the study, the researchers will
acquire climatological data from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Philippine Institute
of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The proponents will also
conduct on-site surveys for the residents of Paco Bagong Lipunan
Condominium. These will be gathered as the numerical data and will be
subject to statistical analysis and calculative methods.

VIII. Data Analysis

In a conclusive research design, research objectives and data
requirements need to be clearly defined. A quantitative data analysis will be
used to determine and analyze the primary data that will be collected during
the process of data gathering. The quantitative data includes the climatological
data acquired from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) which will be used as the primary
data. Further, the accumulated data from the on-site survey will also be used as
data in relation to the thermal conditions experienced by the residents. These
quantitative data will be analyzed and used for statistical tests in order to come
up for a conclusive hypothesis for the study.

IX. Ethical Considerations

The researchers shall keep in confidentiality of all the data that will be
acquired from other groups that will take part in the study including
interviewees, professionals, specialists, and other contributors. Received
information by the proponents is certified to be a crucial component of the
study, and therefore shall be ensured to be concealed. Professionals that will
be involved shall be consulted first before undertaking the necessary
procedures. Furthermore, consents will be presented first before conducting
the interviews and surveys.
