Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Function Representations Board

Content Area: Algebra II
Grade Level(s): 11th Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE9-12.F.IF.9 Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically,
graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a graph of one function and
an algebraic expression for another, say which has the larger maximum.

Technology Standard Addressed:

3c – Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to
create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.

Selected Technology Tool: Discovery Education Board Builder

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

In this assignment, students will need access to a computer. Furthermore, this lesson will be done in the
computer lab. Depending on the school’s resources, hopefully they have assistive technologies for students
who have physical disabilities. As long as students create a board that has different representations of the
function given, they have the creative freedom to design the board however they want.

Lesson idea implementation:

Class will be held in a computer lab for all students to have access to a computer and internet. I will pass out
the instructions and rubric once we get settled into class. Each student will be given a polynomial of degree 4
or higher. Students will use their knowledge to represent their function algebraically, graphically, numerically
in tables, or verbally. The students will use resources like Desmos, Geogebra, and online graphing calculators
to create multiple representations for their function to add to their board.
As the teacher, I will use the beginning of the lesson to help guide student in setting up their board. Using the
projector, I will guide the students to log in to Discovery Education and help them locate the Board Builder. I
will also show the students how to create a board and how to edit the board. As the students are creating
their boards, I will go around the lab to help them and comment on their progress. Once they are finished, the
students will export their board into a PDF and send it to me to grade. These boards could also be posted on
the classroom wall for student work.

Reflective Practice:
This activity will help students have a better understanding how to use BBPTs and multiple online sources to
make connections from content they have learned to what they are learning now. This assignment can be a
wrap-up to a polynomial unit as students tend to forget older content almost immediately after the test or

quiz. Students should make connections that polynomials have multiple means of representations, which
translates to multiple means of solving.
