ABOUT US
IIT Hyderabad
Always Innovating

Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), one of the eight new IITs established in 2008
by the Ministry of Human-Resource Development, is currently located in Hyderabad city and is a part of
history in the making. It started functioning from its temporary campus in August 2008 by admitting
111 B.Tech. students. On 27 February 2009, the foundation stone of IITH was laid by Smt. Sonia Gandhi,
Honourable Chairperson of UPA. It started with just three departments - Computer Science &
Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and has now grown to include, not
only various other engineering departments but also sciences and Liberal Arts with the required
state–of–the–art labs already established.

The University currently has 2551 students and around 200 faculty members. Its youthful and
dynamic faculty, passionate students and dedicated staf, together envision building a premier
institute with the foundational intent being the innovating and cultivating of ideas. With this as its
focus, this ledgling Institute already boasts over an outlay of over 500 million projects. Tie-ups with
foreign universities and industrial giants provide students with international and national
scholarships. These students secure prestigious industrial & research internships that broaden their
perspectives in technology as well as endowing them with adaptability, versatility, team spirit and a
disciplined work ethic.

Director’s
Address

“ Dream loty dreams, and as you

dream, so shall you become.”
- Steve Jobs

I n July 2019 IIT Hyderabad completed 11 years. We have come a long way in the last 11 years. Academically,
we are at the forefront of developing new curricula and programs. We are also at the forefront of research
and development. Our faculty student ratio (1:13); is best amongst all IITs. We have a very strong PG
program. The ratio among Ph.D. students, Masters students and undergraduate students is roughly
30:25:45. Our past placement records are good in most of the departments with an average package of
around 18 lakhs. By Aug 2019, IITH will have a total of 2750 students (of which almost 20% will be female
students), and 205 faculty members. IITH’s sanctioned research funding will be to the tune of Rs.350 crs.
from nearly 300 plus sponsored projects. IITH’s overall citation is 24492 and we have an H-Index of 50. IITH
has strong industry collaboration – we collaborate with nearly 60 industries. Our Japan collaboration is in
full swing with Japanese faculty visiting us and IITH faculty visiting leading Japanese universities on a
regular basis. There is a strong student exchange program with Japan.

IITH has MOUs with at least 50 universities globally, most of them in Japan, USA, Australia, Canada, Europe
and Taiwan.

IITH has three technology incubators – iTIC, Center for Healthcare Entrepreneurship and Fabless Chip
Design Incubator. Moreover, there are 6 research centers –most notable of them being Center of Excellence
in Artificial Intelligence, Nano-technology, Teaching and Learning Center, Design Innovations Center.

On the academic front IITH is innovating and scaling up while maintaining quality. We have B.Tech.
programs in 10 engineering departments, MSc in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, M.A. in

Development Studies, B.Des. and M.Des. in Design, and Ph.D. in all 14 departments. There is strong
emphasis on interdisciplinary academics.

IITH has implemented a very novel academic program referred to as, Fractal Academics – the key idea is to
atomize courses, provide breadth and depth, emphasize courses in liberal arts as well as creative arts,
emphasize project work, and create an interactive learning ambience. In this approach the students will be
well equipped to handle challenges of any job or challenges of post graduate education. IITH ofers a Minor
in Entrepreneurship to all students, a double major, -- hardworking and enthusiastic student can get two
B.Tech degrees. Students at IITH can enrich their knowledge by opting for a minor and/or an honors
program. IITH is the only institution to ofer DigiFab (3D-printing) to all first year students.

Overall, IITH has a very invigorating, lexible and friendly academic program that empowers students to
meet the challenges of any job.

Patents and The very foundation of IIT Hyderabad is based on research
and innovation. The culture of research is inculcated in the

Publications undergraduate students in the first semester itself by

introducing a one credit independent project, where the
students execute a project of their choice in small groups
irrespective of their branch. Heavy emphasis is given to the
thesis component of the post-graduate programs. The
vibrant research culture is evident from the number of
patents and publications IITH has. Till date there are about
85 patent applications filed by IIT Hyderabad. Five patent
applications are granted in US. Considering that the
institute is very young and has only 200 faculty members,
these numbers speak volumes about the quality of
academics and research at IITH.

Research Every research endeavor is a voyage to discover truth and

IITH is committed to promote this voyage in India. It aims at
Endeavours learning through practice and research. The Institute is on its
way in creating the infrastructure, ambiance and culture
necessary for the pursuit of creative ideas.

Innovative The conventional engineering skills are no more suficient to

address the problems of today’s fast changing society. At

Initiatives IITH students are provided with a plethora of choices, from

which they diligently choose with the help of a faculty
advisor. Courses that last for a semester are almost a
foregone story at IITH. From the last academic year onwards
all undergraduate programs started ofering courses that
are of smaller credits; called the fractal academics; very
carefully designed to keep the enthusiasm of the students
and to keep them in pace with the current scientific,
technological and industrial scenarios. These courses are
distributed the time from the first to the eighth semester.
Another academic initiative at IITH is the double major. In
addition to the requirements from the parent branch, a
student can get a major from another department by
successfully completing 24 core credits. The options for a
minor and honour’s degree also exist on top of a double
major. Moreover, the flexibility of the the spectrum of
lectures ofered at IITH. Curriculum at IITH allows an
enthusiastic student to credit any number of courses from
the spectrum of lectures ofered at IITH.

Our collaborations

Indo- Japan Collaboration

IIT Hyderabad has an active collaboration with Japan. This involves joint research
exchange of faculty and students with premier Japanese institutions like
University of Tokyo, Keio University, Osaka University for joint PhD and Master's
guidance, establishment of innovation hubs, collaborations with globally
respected Japanese companies, Todai-IIT & JENESYS Scholarship
Programme, Hitachi-IITH Lecture Series and in future, some infrastructure
development on the main campus.

The collaboration spans across, joint research, human exchange and

infrastructure development. ITH has a very unique collaboration with
Japanese universities and industries. The FRIENDSHIP (Future
Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad to Enhance
Network Development with Scholarship) promotes mobility of
students and faculty between IITH and well reputed Japanese
Universities. “The Project for Future Researchers at IITH to Enhance
Network Development with Scholarship of Japan” (FRIENDSHIP
Project) was initiated from 2nd January 2011 for a period of 8
years till 31st March 2020. Under this program, IITH has signed
MoU with more than 20 Japanese universities and identified
several thrust areas for mutual collaboration.

IITH has three very large projects with the leading Japanese
universities and industry in ICT for disaster management,
