ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The Project has led to very innovative turns and solutions by the cooperation
and coordination of curious minds directly or indirectly involved in the
project. We would like to express our deepest gratitude towards our project
guide Prof. PURVI MAM and to the department of Chemical Engineering,
L.to constantly provide support and guidance. It has been our pleasure to
work on topic due to continuous monitoring and evaluation by our guide
during the project.

ABSTRACT

Paper product manufacturing involves a variety of chemicals used either

directly in paper and pulp production or in the conversion processes (i.e.
printing, gluing) that follow. Due to economic and environmental initiatives,
paper recycling rates continue to rise. In Europe, recycling has increased by
nearly 20% within the last decade or so, reaching a level of almost 72% in
2012. With increasing recycling rates, lower quality paper fractions may be
included. This may potentially lead to accumulation or un-intended spreading
of chemical substances contained in paper, e.g. by introducing chemicals
contained in waste paper into the recycling loop. This study provides an
overview of chemicals potentially present in paper and applies a sequential
hazard screening procedure based on the intrinsic hazard, physical-chemical
and biodegradability characteristics of the substances. Based on the results,
51 substances were identified as potentially critical (selected mineral oils,
phthalates, phenols, parabens, etc) in relation to paper recycling. It is
recommended that these substances receive more attention in waste paper.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 What is Design Thinking?

Design thinking refers to design-specific cognitive activities that designers

apply during the process of Designing. Design thinking is a methodology
not exclusive for designers that help people understand and develop
creative ways to solve a specific issue, generally business oriented.
Design thinking is a formal method for practical, creative resolution of
problems and creation of solutions, with the intent of an improved future
result. In this regard it is a form of solution-based or solution-focused
thinking – starting with a goal (a better future situation) instead of
solving a specific problem. By considering both present and future
conditions and parameters of the problem, alternative solutions may be
explored simultaneously

1.2 What is Availability and Utilization of Waste Paper?

The utilization of paper is the process by which waste paper is turned into
new paper products. It has a number of important benefits besides saving
trees from being cut down. It is less energy and water intensive than paper
made from wood pulp. It saves waste paper from occupying landfill and
producing methane as it breaks down. Around two thirds of all paper
products in the US are now recovered and recycled, although it does not all
become new paper. After repeated processing the fibers become too short for
the production of new paper.

AEIOU SHEET

2.1 AEIOU

The AEIOU Sheet is used to develop and inculcate the curiosity in young minds to
get them solution to several problems of daily life .it’s a check to observe how
feasible the solutions are obtained. At the Same time AEIOU sheet provides a
platform to think widely in the 5 major dimensions namely

1) A – Activity

2) E – Environment

3) I – Interactions

4) O – Objects

5) U – Users

The opportunity of getting innovative ideas can even be very helpful in serving the
world , not only today but also for a brighter tomorrow

2.2 Picture of AEIOU Sheet & Description of Canvas

2.2.1 ACTIVITIES

It’s a set of action that an individual performs in search of successful operations.

Activities may even relate to thoughts coming in implementation.

Activities are not rigid with physical work only . It may also relate to spreading
awareness among individuals through mouth publicity as well.
Fig 3: AEIOU SHEET

2.2.2 Environment
Environments include the entire surrounding nearby. In the sheet we have
mentioned impacts of Waste Paper over environment. Even effects of
recycling are clearly mentioned in the sheet.

2.2.3 Interactions
It’s a normal conversation taking place between individuals, researchers,
common crowd regarding the topic, It is like taking feedback and reviews
from audience
2.2.4 Objects
Objects are the building blocks of the environment .The components
involved in smooth flow of working of ideas. For example as per our topic
we require dryer, reactor, roller etc

2.2.5 Users
Users are the people whose behaviors, preferences, and needs are being
observed. The people directly or indirectly involved in the use of products.
Like in our case, Waste Paper which is Recycle has many users like
student, government etc.

CHAPTER 3

3.1 EMPATHY CANVAS

“Empathy” literally means to see and feel the situation through another
person’s point of view. This sheet has made us think about the Pros and
Cons people will experience during the recycling. its even mentioned in
the happy and sad story of sheet.

CHAPTER 4
IDEATION CANVAS

An ideation canvas is a rough whiteboard where ideas can be stretched

into any limits or dimensions. Ideation Canvas permits an individual to
spread his thought process from finite to infinite. It gets solutions other
than existing for the problem .The new solutions searched must be feasible
for the easy going. This canvas has also led to comparison between
solutions and its applications.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT SHEET

This Sheet relates with final action , once the recycled product start getting

Used in the market one can take the reviews of customers and buyers.
Significant features of the product and its functions are analyzed deeply in
order to go for “rejecting”, “retaining” and “redesigning” of Product.

PROTOTYPE SHEET

The sheet is used to describe the flow of process through figures and
facts. The following schematic diagram depicts one of the process that
leads to recycle of waste paper.

CONCLUSION

When considering all of the economic and environmental impacts, the

choice on whether or not to recycle truly does depend on an
organization's size and dedication to preserving the earth we live on.
While, yes, it is true that recycling practices could be time consuming
and mildly counter-productive, the savings alone ca justify that you are
saving hundreds of trees from needless destruction. As some of the
biggest producers of paper waste, huge organizations, such as companies
and public institutions, really need to understand that, especially for
them, it is no small amount of paper: The average web user prints 28
pages per day(19), so multiply that by the number of employees that
have a desk with a computer with access to a printer, and there's a ball
park figure for how much paper waste an institution generates on its
own. Large institutions need to realize that their decisions about
recycling could really have an impact, not only over the long term, but in
as short a time as a single year.
