Can I Re-Use my ECM? Let’s look at the many variables.

Any ECM that has a physical hole, crack or broken mounting tab would not be a good option to be used
again. An ECM with this damage would need to be replaced.

Another common problem would be the ECM connectors. Any damage to the connector or a broken/bent
pin would require the ECM to be replaced.

Any ECM that is determined to pass the above criteria and found to be in good physical condition may be
re-used. But please keep in mind, a used ECM may not have the same part number as the one you are
replacing. Please be sure to reference TMI or SIS web with your exact Engine Serial Number to confirm
that you are using the proper part number ECM for your application. The correct software will also need to
be identified and installed into the device. Once these steps have been taken, you can attempt to Re-Use
the ECM.

NOTE: Caterpillar ECM’s have an internal lithium battery that can discharge over time that is used for
storing certain parameters. After initial programming if the main battery power to the ECM is
disconnected and critical parameters become unprogrammed, the ECM should not be reused.
