An elastomeric bearing pad is a device constructed partially or wholly from elastomer,
the purpose of which is to transmit loads and accommodate movements between
bridge and its supporting structure. Reinforced bearing consists of alternate layers
of steel or fabric reinforcement and elastomer, bonded together.

4 Design Method A
4.1 Check for compressive stress
Shape factor of one layer of bearing S = L*W / 2*hr1*(L+W)
S/b = 12.06
For Service Load Design (Percentage of Basic
Unit Stress as per AASHTO Table 3.22.1A) 1 % = 150.00 %
Allowable Compressive Stress sc a) sc,TL = GS / b
= 7.91 Mpa
b) sc,TL = 1000.00 psi
= 6.90 Mpa
Actual Compressive Stress sc a) sc,TL = RT / (W*L)
= 4.25 Mpa
SAFE…….O.K.!
4.2 Check for compressive deflection
Deflection due to total load and to live load alone shall be considered separately.
Instantaneous deflection shall be………………. Dc = S ecihri.
where: eci = Instantaneous compressive strain in elastomer
i
number i (change in
thickness divided by the unstressed thickness)
hri = Thickness of elastomer layer number i.
Shape factor of one layer of bearing S = L*W / (2*hr2*(L+W)
(For cover layer) S/b = 7.76
From AASHTO Figure 14.4.1.2B, sc,TL = 616.63 psi
Compressive Strain,eci (%) eci = 2.90 %
Instantaneous deflection Dc = 0.58 mm
Add DCR(%) due to creep deflection at 25 years DCR = 0.20 mm
Total compressive deflection, DcT DcT = 0.78 mm
