ALAPPUZHA: The death of Fr Paul Arackal has come as a heavy loss to the downtrodden coastal
folks especially the fishermen of the state.

A true ‘messiah’ of the backward community, Fr Paul’s dedicated support helped them attain a
place in the social strata of the state.
He formulated the Catholikka Matsya Thozhilali Union in 1971 and fought
against anti­fishermen polices of the state and central governments.
“His leadership in the agitation against Marine Bill, demand for police patrolling
in the coastal belt and other agitation paved way for tremendous changes in
the lives of coastal people and fishermen.

He reconstituted the Catholikka Matsya Thozhilali Union to set up the Latin
Catholic Fishermen Federation in 1977 which stood as the frontrunner for the CURRENT RESULTS FIXTURES
uplift of the fishermen in the 70s and 80s, Alappuzha Diocese media director Fr
Milton Kalapurackal said.

He was in the forefront to change the living standards of fishermen. The Franciscan Family
Apostolate, Assisi Hospital and Assisi Care Works were established in 1973 under the Charity
Circle formulated by him, said Fr Milton.

The first agitation led by the priest was in 1977 demanding consolation money to the family of a
fisherman who died while fishing in sea at Nayarambalam. He led the fishermen to stage agitation
in front of the house of thethen Home Minister K M Mani demanding `10,000 as consolation
amount.

Another agitation was organised in Fort Kochi demanding rehabilitation of coastal people who
were evacuated for the construction of Navy’s INS Dronacharya.

 He started four coir factories at Punnapara, Chethi, Omanappuzha and Aarattukulam exclusively
for fishermen community.

The Latin Catholic Fishermen Federation led by him put forwarded the demands to implement

monsoon trawling ban, free education to the children of fishermen, fisheries school, allot stipend
to the children of fishermen, establish coastal panchayat and establish coastal assembly
constituencies in its state meet in 1980.

Fr Paul completed his primary education in the LP School, Chethi, and high school education at St
Francis Assisi School, Arthunakal and joined seminary for pastoral studies.

He received priesthood from the Yokohama Archbishop in 1964 and ordained Monsignor by Pope
Benedict XVI.
