Xiang Miang And The Snail Analysis

Xiang Miang is the famous trickster and folktale of Laos. For generations, tales of his

exploits have been passed along. Xiang Miang is clever and bold, and if he's sometimes also

a bit lazy, that doesn't seem to hurt him. In this story, Xiang Miang illustrated as a bad

character. He is arrogant and likes to mock the weak. In this story, Xiang Miang accompanied

by The Snail as the main character along with him. This story has a plot that similar to “The

hare and The Tortoise”, but the main difference only the characters

The Story begins when Xiang Miang meets The Snail at the edge of the swamp. He

asking The Snail where he wants to go but with the mocking face. The snail feels quite

insulted. The snail challenge Xiang Miang to have a race with him. They deal to meet again

in the same spot by tomorrow. The snail asks his friends for help to defeat Xiang Miang. The

race begins, Xiang Miang left the snail behind, but he doesn’t know that snail already

prepared a strategy to defeat him. All the snails' friends are set along the intervals around the

edge of the swamps. Xiang get tired because he is run too fast until his legs could no longer

carry him.

The story has a powerful message to the reader of this story to never underestimate

enemies even they look weak. The main theme of the story is about the pride that causes

defeat. Xiang Miang defeated because he is too pride and mocking The snail because he is

weak and slow. However, Xiang Miang don,t that snail is clever and set up strategies to

defeat him.
