INTRODUCTION

The fundamental goal of this scan to get a higher grasp on the concept of
equilibrium,where objects at relaxation are no longer solely the sum of all forces
equal to zero, but also having the sum of all torques equal to zero.Investigation was
once a easy qualitative test that helped one to decide how to find the core of the
gravity of an object.Specifically,one tried to locate the center of the gravity by
hanging the weighted meter stick using a thread at a retort stand and clamp.From this
investigation,one used to be to capable to see how equilibrium existed in the
system,the calculated net torques and internet forces ended up equaling to zero.A
weight were constant in this experiment however the function of the weight that we
manipulated to find the equilibrium in that device and to calculated the new forces
and torques.
AIM : To investigate the balancing of turning forces on a suspended
metre ruler.

APPARATUS : Good quality metre ruler

5N force meter
Weight holder
2X100g masses
Strong thread
Electronic balance
Retort stand and clamp

Fixed support

0 - 5N
r
forcemeter

Metre ruler

W2 (weight of metre ruler)

W1
20g

METHOD:

1) The meter rule was weighted using an electronic balance.This force will acted
through the 25 cm mark of the rule that we already assumed the meter rule is fairly
uniform.
2) The apparatus was set up as shown in the above diagram.To avoided dropping the
heavy masses,you must careful.The meter rule was attached to the weight holder and
force meter using loops of thread,which can be slipped along the length of the rule.
3) The position of the suspended weight(20 g) was adjusted and the spring balanced
until the rule is balanced.
4) The values of W1,W2 and T was recorded.
5) The positions of W1 and T on the ruler was noted.These positions were recorded in
Table 1.
6) The positions of W1 and T was changed until another equilibrium situation
achieved.These positions are recorded in Table 1.

RESULTS:

TABLE 1
Position of W1/cm Position of r1/cm Position of r2/cm Tension / N
1 6.4 17.6 0.8
2 6.1 16.9 0.8
3 5.9 16.1 0.8
4 15.6 15.4 0.8
5 5.4 14.6 0.8
6 5.2 13.8 0.8
RESULTS ANALYSIS:

1) Choose a point on the ruler.For each set of the values on the Table 1,calculate
the complete clockwise and anticlockwise moment acting on the ruler about this
point.Put these values in a Table2.

Total clockwise moment/Ncm Total anticlockwise moment/Ncm

Torques=r*F Torques=r*F
=(18.6)(196) =1(0.8)
=3645.6 N =0.8 N

Torques=r*F Torques=r*F
=(18.9)(196) =(2)(0.8)
=3704.4 N =1.6 N
Torques=r*F Torques=r*F
=(19.1)(196) =(3)(0.8)
=3743.6 N =2.4 N
Torques=r*F Torques=r*F
=(19.4)(196) =(4)(0.8)
=3802.4 N =3.2 N
Torques=r*F Torques=r*F
=(19.6)(196) =(5)(0.8)
=3841.6 N =4 N
Torques=r*F Torques=r*F
=(19.8)(196) =(6)(0.8)
=3880.8 N =4.8 N
3.From your results,what conclusion can you come to about the total clockwise and
anticlockwise moments acting on a balanced ruler?

-From our results,the conclusion can we come about the clockwise and anticlockwise
is not equilibrium.

4. Does your conclusion depend on the ruler is regarded as the fulcrum.

- No, because the clockwise and the anticlockwise moment is not in equilibrium.

DISCUSSION

In this experiment,we actually expect that total clockwise and anticlockwise must
equilibrium which mean must be same to each other.Actually in this experiment,we
actually use a different position of W1 which is 1cm,2cm,3cm,4cm,5cm and 6cm and
use a constant weight is 20 g.After complete all the experiment,the position of r1 and
position of r2 we calculate using the formula TF=T1+T2.From that,we can determine
whether it is balanced ruler are equilibrium or not.The distance was measured in

by using a ruler and measuring the space between the centre point and the point at
which the string was attached. It was important to note that the centre point was not
exactly at zero, it started from where the hole of the ruler was located. This
measurement was then converted into metres, which is the standard unit for the
equations that were used to calculate force and torque.

CONCLUSION

After completing this experiment,one was able to investigate the balancing of turning
forces on suspended meter ruler.From all the result and calculation that we have
done,we can balanced the meter rule but from the concept of clockwise and
anticlockwise,we does not get the equilibrium.
