ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
1. Thermocouple junctions of dissimilar metals and alloys are used for temperature
measurements. A voltage difference ′𝑉′ is generated between two junctions at different
temperatures. The values for a Chromel-Alumel thermocouple and nickel-aluminum
alloys are given below. Employing natural cubic spline interpolation, obtain the cubic
polynomials and hence find the voltage difference for 𝑇 = 2.70 𝐶 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑇 = 3.50 𝐶. [13]
𝑇 0𝐶 1 2 3 4
𝑉 (𝑚𝑣) 1.0 0.5 0.333 0.25

2. The upward velocity of a rocket is given as a function of time in the following table.
𝑡(sec ) 0 10 15 20 22.5 30
𝑉(𝑡) (𝑚/𝑠) 0 227.04 362.78 517.35 602.97 901.67
Determine the value of the acceleration at 𝑡 = 16 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑠 using Lagrange’s cubic
interpolation. [12]
3. A car laps a racetrack in 84 secs. The speed of the car at each 6 secs interval is
determined using a radar gun and is given from the beginning of the lap, in feet/second,
by the entries in the following table. Find the length of the track using (i) Simpson’s
1/3 rule (ii) Simpson’s 3/8 rule. [12]
Time (S) 0 6 12 18 24 30 36 42 48 54 60 66 72 78 84
Speed 124 134 148 156 147 133 121 109 99 85 78 89 104 116 123

4. Using Runge-Kutta 4th order, solve the differential equation,

𝑥 2 −𝑦 2
𝑦 ′′ = , given 𝑦(0) = 1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 ′ (0) = 0 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = 0.5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 = 1. [13]
1+𝑦′2
