40Brownson here repeats the teaching
that the baptized who profess the truth
bequeathed by Christ and are subject to
those appointed by Him to rule the
Church are brought into most intimate
union with Him. Each individual,
although living his own life and having
his own responsibilities and concerns,
is joined to Christ and receives the life
of sanctifying grace from Him, as the
cells, nerves, and organs of a human
body depend on the head. This truth
has been concretized by the term "the
Mystical Body of Christ." In this sense,
not only the saints in Heaven, but also
the just on earth, in a secondary and
subordinate manner, are mediators
with Christ. Thus, St. Augustine,
following St. Paul's words to the
Corinthians, "Now you are the body of
Christ, member for member" (cf. 1
Cor. 12:27), used the term "the Whole
Christ" to indicate, not only the Lord in
Himself, but as including all - the just
on earth and the blessed in Heaven -
who are joined to Him. - ED.
