Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

Philippines is a agricultural land, and what happen in agricultural development if the

offspring of the farmers are not interested in farming. Farmers are getting older, some of them

are retiring at working on their farm, and no one of their offspring are not interested to be pass

to them the responsibility in farm, if that work is not they want. In this case of older parent and

their children are both substantial

The leading reasons why young people dont like farming because of lack of information

in agricultural, credit and negative perceptions around farming. Many of the next generation or

for those offspring are shy away from agriculture, as the researchers found that those offspring

they mean that agriculture is very old fashioned and they say this work is a limited opportunities

only in the future.

The researchers find out why those offspring are not interested in farming, the

researchers survey about the income of filipino farmers and the result showed that the average

income of filipino families was 267 thousand and take a look in comparison the average annual

family for the same year is 215 thousand. The filipino families has a saving of 52 thousand pesos

in a year. Therefore this budget is not enough to support their financial for the whole year,

agriculture is a hard work but the saving income for the whole year is too small.
2

In research quoted an agriculture department official say that an average age of 57 years

and assume the average average life span of 70, the article published in February 2013 sees that

the philippines might experience a critical shortage of farmers in 15 years

This research is to encourage the youth to take agriculture, it requires many workers

because of the small size of farms. The 2012 census of agriculture of the Philippine Statistic

Authority (PSA) reported 5.56 million farms covering. And the number of farmers in the

Philippines agriculture is dying this is sad reality of the country

This research is for farmers and to all generation, and the researchers found that the new

generation needs support for accessing markets and to improve productivity, the access needs to

put or add is to take a modern technologies. This research would help to reduce other areas of

lack of understanding in farming and this research would go to create a dynamic agricultural

sector that the poverty make smaller when they try to take agriculture in the next generations.

The following are the agricultural progress in International,,,National,,Local,,and

ofcourse the agricultural in the province of the researchers.

International Agriculture and Rural Development Major. For those interested

students that are interested for facing to a unique issues, the international agriculture and rural

development make a system that are associated to a food and rural development for them to

emerging nations.
3

The National Agricultural Research ACT, 2005 provides for the development of an

agricultural research system for Uganda, hereby referred to as the National Agricultural Research

System (NARS), for the purpose of improving agricultural research services delivery, financing

and management. The NARS means a cross section of stakeholders whether in public or private

sector; and comprises of the organisation, public agricultural research institutes, universities and

other tertiary institutions, farmer groups, civil society organisation, private sector and any other

entity engaged in the provision of agricultural research services

Local farming is a channel which involving more than one intermediaries between farm

and consumer. It is also a short distribution of channels, it's examples are the producer co-ops,

markets virtual, supported agriculture community, stands in a public and at the farm, and

groceries neighborhood or specialized. It is aimed for reducing fruit by it's travelled distances,

and among other thing. Local farming also aimed to reestablishing a relationship of a consumer

and a farmers.

Agriculture in la union has a 4 H club means HEAD, HEART, HANDS, and HEALTH

which mean an organization of a global youth in a nonprofit nonpartisan in school which involve

in a progress of those agricultural and livelihood projects . It is also for a development of a

family farm..
4

The purpose of this study is to know the reason of a farmer if why they don't have a

farmer offspring if it is able that they need a heir to their land . A farmer should be pass their

responsibility on their offspring and the researchers know that every person are becoming old.

Framework of the Study

This theory discuss how farmers behavior accelerate their community. The purpose of this

theory is to determine what are the factors or influnce why this offspring take over farming

Factors that influence the next generation's decision to take over the family farm

Colette Dumas, Jean Pierre Dupuis, Francine Richer, Louise St.-Cyr

Family Business Review 8 (2), 99-120, 1995

The survival of family farms is threatened by rapid change, intense international competition,

and a resulting reduction of interest in perpetuating the family farm. What influences the next

generation to pursue family farming, in spite of the difficulties? Do these factors differ between

men and women? An in-depth, descriptive, and exploratory study of thirty next generation

family farm members indicates specific factors critical to their decision to pursue the family farm

succession. The findings are depicted in a framework that portrays these factors of influence and

the effect they have on the succession decision of the next generation. Implications for practice

and future research are also presented.

5

Agricultural Location Theory 1: Agricultural location theory is the assistance of materials of

the farmers and it accesing the land and inputs, and needed of farmers. If the agricultural has

enough materials in farming it would be enough to make farming and to attractive the young

people and the offsring of the farmers. For the agricultural land users the locations with better

access or nearer. The agricultural land values become so high that only producers can afford the

greatest yield location.

Ricardo's theory was emphasized the physical qualities of the land and urban demand it shows

an intended consequence of the spread of agricultural education. The new generational break in

the family and community tradation of smallholder and small scale in farming. In agricultural

land use intensities and also declined increasing distance from the centre.

Von Thünen's theory is to focus attention on the distance between farm to market as a modern

versions. This is a theory which provide a simple models. Once the suitable factor, and the

agriculture land is slightly affected by its relative location it will might apper at first. Its analysis

of the lang pattern is one of the long basic concern.

David Phiri(DP): This agricultural study is important because its focus on what is happening

now what will gonna be happeb an ageing population that has been a tendency for young people

to get away in agriculture because it has been in assiated with rural economies. So young people

decided to move into urban areas to look a better job. But the sad reality the old farmers will die
6

off. This research needs to find a next generation who can sustain farming to feed an ever

increasing population.

Figure1. The figure shows the child of those farmers who live in another career or

profession in their life.

The leaves represent the many job opputunities that is different from farming

Trunk the main woody stem of a tree as distinct from its branches and roots represent by

the father whose working on farm

And the roots one of the part of a plant that attaches is to the ground or to support, the

roots represent those offspring who did'nt follow the trunk

Statement of the Problem

The study determined the

Specifically, the study answered the following question

1.What is the demograpical status of the participants

A. Sex;

B. Age;

C. Background of their living;

D. How many are they in the family;

E: level of education of their kids;

2. Why do the farmer each kid dont want to be a farmer?

A. Reasons why they choose another kind of living

B. What/who influence them why they dont like farming

3. How do they deal with it?

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of this research report, the following terms are

operationally defined:

Farmer - the people who want to transfer their work to their child but the
9

Kids choose a different kind of living. A person which working and cultivates

a farm a person who are planting and cropping. A person where they should

pass their responsibility when they became old.

Offspring - refers to the youths whose not interested in farming.

A child of a farmers that should be have the work of this parents. A person that

should be pass the responsibility that has in a farm.

Farming - refers to the agriculture that some of the new generation don’t

Like this kind of work. It is the work on a farm like planting different

vegetables and should be pass on a next generations.

Importance of the Study

The importance of this research is to help the group of families or to help those

offspring of this farmer to dont force there child if they dont like to take the farming because

after this research they will know what are the reasons of their offspring why they are not

interested in farming .And one of the purpose of this researh is to encourage the next

generation that farming is very important because we need people who can sustain agriculture to

feed an ever increasing population

Poor People

The agriculture is an important sector for poor people in terms of economy and provides a

livelihoods. Further agricultural would help reduce poverty and improve food security.Poor

people can provide their own foods or their own supply by the means of farming.Agricultural

and rural development can create jobs and livelihoods for small farmers and the landless.
10

Government

Agriculture is a work which be devoted to planting different plants and crops. Agriculture

is very important every one of us. The reason of why they have a food for everyday is that is

because agriculture. Government are protecting those farmers they help them to be more

productable of food,,, but then the worried og nee generation because they know that no one can

dont want to be a farmer someday.

Students

The researchers know that theres a lot of student who hated to become a farmer. One of

the reason of them is they dont want to feel the difficulty of cultivating a farm. But then this

rearch want them to realize if no one or somebody became a farmer they will feel the lack of

supplies of food right now in our country they feel the lack of food one of the example is the lack

of rice or grain. In this situation,, if those farmers are be lost they will feel the difficulty, each of

them will feel the suffer of this farmer will lost one by one no more want to become a farmer

Farmer

They feel that they gave importance on what work they have. And they will not worry

about what happen if one of those farmers are slowly losting and no one dont want to become a

famer beacuse they know that every person are becoming old and someone will die

METHODOLOGY

Research Design
12

Case study research is to understand the boundaries of the case and the complexity of the

behavior patterns, using multiple sources of data researchers may attain the rishest possible

understanding of a case

Case study suit to this research to define why the offspring of farmers are not interested in

agricultural.

Sources of Data

The participants of the research are three farmers who have a child or offspring who choose

another or different kind of career this offspring dont want to be farmer someday. These farmer

participants are from Gumot 52 years old female, Tabtabungao 51 years old female, and

Binmeckeg 60 years old male.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The researchers has an analysis of one several case, using a in-depth interviews. Question

should focus on it.

The researchers had observation of the participants in their places to find out the life of

those farmers who having a child that the work is not inclined in their work.

Analysis of Data
13

The coding technique that the researcher use is the open coding as cool analysis . It is used to

identified the reason of those farmers offspring that they don't want to became a farmer that

choose a different career .

Cool analysis is a process of culling out significant statements and coming up with data

categories.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

14

Theme no. 1: “problema danom, haan tayo makatalon nu awan ti danom ”

Hindrance entitled a farmer whose offspring is not interesred in farming. This is

particularly show what are the major problem in farming and it tells that the most common

problem to that place and people is water. This result further confirms the conclusion found out

that water is the valuable thing in farming. In this study the participant told that if there’s no

water it is difficult for them to nurse their crops.

Theme no. 2 “agmulmula, agab-abono,napadas ko met diyay agburas ti mais,

agkaykayabang

Experience in farming the participants experience some work in farming. In participant

one sometimes he help his parents in planting same with participant 2 and 3. The participant

thinks that farming is hard work because they experience planting, they lack of information

about agricultural. This theme is a barrier to take them agriculture because they experience some

work in farming and they are lack of information about agriculture.
