Quantitative Literacy Assignment

Despite the larger population St. George has compared to Tooele, I noticed that their crime rate
is lower than Tooele’s. St. George had a population of 80,202 people in 2015 and Tooele had a
population of 51,808 people. St. George had a total of 1496 crimes that year compared to Tooele
which was 1664 crimes. I believe the reason why St. George’s crime rates are lower than
Tooele’s because St. George is known to be a retirement place for a lot of senior citizens. I
would also think that Tooele’s crime rate is higher because there are more young adults to
middle aged people in Tooele and not enough jobs in the area to keep them all occupied. That
may explain why Tooele’s crime rate is 56.49 per 1000 whereas St. George’s is 18.65.

In 2014 the drug offenses were 15% out of all the part 2 crimes and in 2015 the drug offenses
were 17% out of all part 2 crimes. I do believe that some drug offenses did lead up to property
crimes as well as crimes against persons. People get very addicted to drugs and honestly will do
almost anything for a “fix”.

Three crime categories that I saw increase in arrests are Sale/Mfg Opium/Cocaine or Derivative,
Possess Opium/Cocaine or Derivative, and Possess Marijuana. I believe the crime arrests
increased for “Sale/Mfg Opium/Cocaine or Derivative” and “Possess Opium/Cocaine or
Derivative” because their derivatives such as morphine and codeine are classified as Opioids.
Opioids have been an issue since the 90s however we’re seeing a significant increase of opioid
abuse since 2010 and each year it continues to get worse as access to those opioids are easier
now a days. Same with Marijuana, the increase of crime arrests with Marijuana would have to do
with it being more accessible to the public, especially with Marijuana being used for not only its
recreational benefits, but also for its medical benefits.

This assignment has broadened my knowledge on the statistics of crime rates. I didn’t realize the
different amount of offenses, and that there are classifications for them such as Part 1 and Part 2
crimes.
