PART I: INTERPRETING A PIPING AND INSTRUMENTATION

DIAGRAM (P&ID)

FLOW CONTROL LOOP #1

Flow Transmitter- transmits values

gathered and sends to a controller

Flow Controller - accepts the data and

interprets it to an actuator to control
the flow rate if needed.

 SENSOR: Orifice Meter

- For differential pressure
 ACTUATOR: Pneumatic piston/ actuator
that controls flow exit valve at certain flow
rate.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL LOOP #1

Temperature Transmitter- transmits values

gathered and sends to a controller

Temperature Controller- accepts data and

interprets it and transfer to control the
temperature by opening an outlet valve, if
needed.

 SENSOR: Thermocouple
o Furnace – extreme temperature
 ACTUATOR: Pneumatic Piston that controls exit
flow valve at certain temperature,
Activity A: Interpretation and Construction of a Piping & Instrumentation (P&ID) 2

LEVEL CONTROL LOOP#1

Level Transmitter – transmits values

gathered and sends to a controller

Level Controller - accepts data and interprets

it and transfer it to an actuator to control the
outlet valve once a certain level is reached.

 SENSOR: should be a point level sensor

 Tuning fork level sensor
X Capacitance level sensor
X IR optical level sensor

 ACTUATOR: Pneumatic piston that lets the

bottom stream flow into TK – 16 when the level
of the bottoms in the tower is sufficient. Enough.

PRESSURE CONTROL LOOP #1

Pressure Transmitter
-transmits values
gathered and sends to a
controller.

Pressure Controller -
accepts data and
interprets it and transfer
it to an actuator to
control a value that
would release
components inside the
reactor to control
pressure inside.
 SENSOR: Pressure Gauge
 ACTUATOR: Pneumatic actuator that opens or closes the pressure control valve.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL LOOP #2

Temperature Transmitter -
transmits values gathered and
sends to a controller.

Temperature Controller –
accepts data and interprets it
and sends signals to an
actuator to control a heat
exchanger once a set
temperature is reached.
 SENSOR: Thermocouple or RTD’s
 ACTUATOR: Pneumatic piston that activates the heat exchanger stream to increase
the temperature of the recycled bottom stream when its temperature decrease below
the set value.

LEVEL CONTROL LOOP #2

Level Transmitter -
transmits values
gathered and sends to a
controller.
Level Controller –
accepts data and
interprets it and transfer
it to an actuator to
control openings in the
tank to control the level
to reach its set point.
 SENSOR: Float Switch level Sensor
 ACTUATOR: Pneumatic actuator that opens the valve of tank when high level is reached
and closes when low level is reached.
