Thesis: “Impulse, Authenticity & Empowerment: The Synthesis of Specific Techniques of Acting,
Directing, Voice, Movement and Expression, and their Application to the Direction of and Acting in a
Created Production.”

Thesis Production: Down Will Come Baby was a production woven from original and published
material in a personal exploration of the taboos and the dark side of motherhood, parenthood and
womanhood. Created, directed and performed by Andrea Southwick, BU students & professional
colleagues.

and business skills; the art and practice of teaching acting; and the application and integration
of the prior 4 semesters’ training to rehearsal and performance.

Acting 2 for Theatre Majors
Through intensive experiential study of Stanislavski-based techniques including Meisner and
Hagen, as well as physical techniques such as Viewpoints, the acting major develops a deep sense
of truth, emotional freedom, and is challenged to risk and to fully commit to choices.

Acting 3 for Theatre Majors


Building on Acting 1 & 2, the psychophysical work is deepened while delving into physical acting
techniques of Grotowksi & Viewpoints. All is applied to a spectrum of theatrical genres.

Actors & Acting for Theatre Minors & Non-Majors


Through techniques of Meisner, Hagen, Grotowski, Linklater, Bogart and many others, students
learn fundamental elements of acting, creative expression and collaboration in the theatre,

Building on Actors & Acting, students delve more deeply into various acting techniques for truth
and authenticity, and emotional and creative freedom. All is applied to assorted theatrical material.

Voice & Speech for the Actor & Public Speaker


Speech and vocal techniques for public presentation: relaxation, releasing the natural voice,
breath work, resonance, range, articulation, projection. The connection of the voice & body to the
expression of ideas and emotion in dramatic and personal material for public presentation.

Voice & Movement
Vocal techniques such as Linklater & Roy Hart, and movement/physical acting techniques such
as Grotowski and Bogart’s Viewpoints are used to release tension, confront habitual blocks, and
develop ease in vocal production, articulation, and creative movement.

Acting 1
Through a variety of acting techniques, students learn fundamental elements of acting, creative
expression and collaboration in the theatre, culminating in the application of various methods to
scene and character study.

Acting 2
Building on Acting 1, students delve more deeply into various acting techniques for a sense of truth
and authenticity, and emotional and creative freedom. All is applied to assorted theatrical material.

For 12 years, Southwick Studio offered a comprehensive program of theatre arts classes and workshops to
adult actors from novice to professional. Our faculty of theatre professionals taught an array of courses and
workshops for the fall, winter, spring and summer sessions. Each summer we mounted a full-scale
production with students and faculty.

Administrative Duties: Designed curriculum and courses, taught classes, produced and directed 7
annual productions, hired and oversaw faculty, administered program, coordinated marketing,
registration/sales.
