Dear Parents, 

 
We are excited to begin our new unit on ​Stars, Sun, and Moon​. Students will get to explore 
our solar system and learn why the moon changes shape each night. We hope this parent letter 
will serve as a tool to help inform you of what your child is learning in class. Below you will find 
the Georgia Standards of Excellence and key vocabulary words for our upcoming unit.

Our approximate test date for this unit is ​Friday, October 25th​. ​This date may change as 
the unit progresses. Please always check weekly newsletters for updated test dates.   
 
Science Standards​: 
 
1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about stars having different sizes and 
brightness (S2E1) 
a. Ask questions to describe the physical attributes (size and brightness) of stars. 
(S2E1a) 
b. Construct an argument to support the claim that although the sun appears to be 
the brightest and largest star, it is actually medium in size and brightness. (S2E1b) 
 
2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to develop an understanding of the 
patterns of the sun and the moon and the sun’s effect on Earth. (S2E2)
