A Case Analysis Of Otto Frederick Warmbier who Visited Korea and was Arrested.

North Korea is a strict country, to protect them and their nation. Because of this action, the
Notth Korean Government arrested Otto Frederick Warmbier by stealing a propaganda poster in
their hotel. They accused him a "Hostile Act" and by that, he was sentenced a 15 years
imprisonment with hard labor.

Otto Frederuck Warmbier was arrested because of stealing a Propaganda in their hotel. Otto
was a college student in University of Virginia when he was arrested. He was born on December
12, 1994 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fred, his father and Cindy, his mother first child, and the older
brother to Fred and Cindy’s other two children, Austin and G.W. Otto graduated as the
salutatorian of Wyoming High School in 2013 and was a National Merit scholar and was an
athletic young man captain of the soccer team in high school He enrolled in the University of
Virginia later that same year. He pursued a major in economics and had earned enough credits
to graduate as a sophomore. He also spent one summer studying at the London School of
Economics. Otto loved working with numbers and learning about the management of
companies, working for a time at an investment bank on Wall Street. He planned to pursue
further education in the fields of business and finance.

Otto was scheduled to participate in a study abroad program in Hong Kong. Prior to the
scheduled beginning of that program, Otto traveled in Asia in December 2015. During that trip,
Otto took a tour to North Korea through Young Pioneer Tours, a China-based tour operator that
catered to Westerners. Otto believed this was an opportunity to understand how people lived in
one of the only closed societies in the world.

He was arrested at Pyongyang International Airport and was accused of attempting to steal a
propaganda poster in his hotel. Later on, the North Korea make a press conference for otto and
forced him to make a false confession. He confessed to the crime of taking down a political
slogan in the staff-only area of the hotel where his tour group was staying. He stated that this
“task was given by the Friendship United Methodist Church,” a church in Cincinnati, in exchange
for the promise of a used car, so that the poster could be hung in the church as a trophy.

North Korea repeatedly demanded to U.S. government officials that the United States take
various actions, such as removing sanctions, as a condition of Otto’s release. The U.S.
Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”) imposed additional
sanctions, designating top officials of the North Korean regime, including Kim Jong Un, for
having engaged in, facilitated, or been responsible for an abuse or violation of human rights. A
top official stated that the sanctions highlight the U.S. Government's condemnation of this
regime’s abuses and our determination to see them stopped.”U.S. Department of the Treasury,
Treasury Sanctions North Korean Senior Officials and Entities Associated with Human Rights
Abuses. Several bills that would impose increased sanctions on North Korea were also pending
in the House of Representatives.

North Korea hide Otto's condition to the public. The physician came to rescue or evacuate Otto
since the hospital had poor sanitary conditions, antiquated equipment and personnel shortages,
and that he believed that North Korea might not release Otto unless he wrote a falsely positive
evaluation of Otto’s medical condition. Otto returned to the U. S. and was blind and deft. He had
a shaved head, a feeding tube coming out of his nose, was jerking violently and howling, and
was completely unresponsive to any of their efforts to comfort him. They also noticed that his
once straight teeth were now misaligned and had been forced into abnormal positions,
particularly in the front of his mouth. Otto was transported to the medical center at UC Health
where physicians conducted a number of tests. Based on those tests and their observations,
they concluded that he was severely brain damaged and that his condition was unrecoverable.
They also concluded that his extensive loss of brain tissue was caused by an earlier hypoxic-
ischemic brain injury caused by the cessation or severe reduction of blood flow to the brain.
When Otto originally traveled to North Korea, he was a healthy and physically active young man
and had no physical condition that would cause the cessation or severe reduction of blood flow
to the brain that occurred while he was in North Korean custody.

We all know that North Korea is a very strict country or nation. This is to protect each of them
from war, the most repressive country. The government sharply curtails all basic liberties,
including freedom of expression, religion and conscience, assembly, and association. It prohibits
political opposition, independent media, civil society, or trade unions. Regarding to Otto
Frederick Warmbier's case, he is also wrong for stealing propaganda poster. Because at the first
place, he knows about the North Koreas Government is strict, another is that the U.S.
Government and the North Korea is incompatible. However, North Korea is also wrong for lying
about Otto's condition and to have a false confession to the public, it is against Human Rights.
They did not let Otto to speak about the truth and to tell what was really happen. In addition,
for the hard labor that causes Otto to comatose and did not tell it to his family. Which causes
otto to death.
