PART 1. – GENERAL

1.1. SUMMARY

A. This Section covers designing, furnishing, installing, inspecting, quality assurance, testing
and documentation of Vertical Sump Pumps.
B. This Section covers the following scope of supply:
1. Electric motor-driven vertical sump pumps with volute casing design and non-
submerged motors.
2. Electric motor-driven vertical sump pumps with volute casing design and submerged
motors.
3. Guide and hoist system for submersible pumps
4. Float switches
5. Pump controls

1.2. DEFINITIONS

A. Vertical Sump Pump: A vertical wet pit cantilever sump type pump, suspended from a
support plate covering the sump, with electric motor-driver mounted on a support above the
cover plate.
B. Vertical Submersible Pump: A wet pit sump type pump designed for pump and electric
motor-driver to be completely submerged in the pumped fluid.
C. Air Release Valve – A float operated valve designed to release air from the pump casing.

1.3. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. The location, description, and environmental conditions are stated in the Project Design
Basis.

B. Vertical sump pumps will be located outdoors with a design ambient temperature range of
32° F (0° C) to 122° F (50° C).
C. Select pumps to meet the pressure and flow requirements of the connected system.
D. Select pumps for best efficiency over the range of discharge heads and flows required for
the application.
E. Provide pumps capable of being operated singly or in parallel combinations from minimum to
maximum capacity and free of cavitation-sourced hydraulic or mechanical deterioration type
damage over the entire range of operation.
F. Provide pump-motor units capable of at least 6 hot starts per hour.
G. Ensure combined pump and driver noise level is less than 90 DBA when measured 3 feet (1
meter) in any direction from the pump/driver unit.
H. Ensure pump vibration does not exceed the limits specified in Hydraulic Institute / ISO
standards.
I. Select electric motor drivers to operate in the non-overloaded condition over the range of
discharge heads and flows required for the application. Do not consider motor service factor
when determining required motor size.
J. Where system requirements and peak efficiency can be met with equipment of different
operating speeds, select the lower speed option.
K. Select materials of construction and coatings appropriate for the fluid being pumped and the
external environmental conditions.
L. Furnish equipment to have a minimum service life of not less than ten (10) years under the
conditions expected at the project site and in the system in which the equipment will be
installed, excluding expendable items such as bearings, seals, and gaskets.
M. Provide equipment designed for ease of maintenance with wearing parts easily replaceable.

1.4. SUBMITTALS

A. Comply with Section 013300, “General Submittal Requirements” for data and document
submittals.
B. Submit calculations used to size the equipment.
C. Submit all specifications prepared to purchase the equipment.
D. Submit product data for pumps, drivers, furnished specialties, and accessories, including
catalogue data, dimensions, weights (shipping, installed, and operating), materials data,
coatings data, and certified performance curves. On performance curves, plot flow versus
total dynamic head and include associated curves for efficiency, pump brake horsepower (or
kW), submergence and required NPSH. Clearly mark rpm, shut-off head, design point and
run-out limitations on the performance curves.
E. Submit motor data including manufacturer and type, frame designation, rated power output,
voltage, phase, frequency, full load rpm, direction of rotation, service factor, WR2 of rotor,
design operating temperature, insulation class and rating, efficiency at 100% and 75% load,
power factor at 100% and 75% load, full load current, starting current, locked rotor current,
breakdown or pull-out torque, pull-in torque, allowable starting cycle frequency in cold and
hot condition, total starts assumed for design life, thrust load capability, thrust bearing
calculations, terminal box and motor outline dimensions, weights, and enclosure details.
F. Submit expected noise level data for the combined pump and driver.
G. Submit installation and start-up instructions.

H. Submit shop drawings showing layout and connections for pumps. Include setting drawings
with templates, directions for installation of foundation bolts, anchor bolts and other
anchorages, and maintenance clearances
I. Submit diagrams showing magnitude and direction of loads transmitted to the foundation
during all normal and emergency operating conditions.
J. Submit wiring diagrams detailing wiring for power, signal, and control systems differentiating
between manufacturers installed wiring and field installed wiring.
K. Submit pump manufacturer’s test results certifying performance under specified operating
conditions and compliance with specified requirements.
L. Submit operations and maintenance data in accordance with Section 017823, “General
Operation and Maintenance Data”.
M. Submit field acceptance test data demonstrating proper performance in accordance with the
specifications.
N. Submit “as-built” drawings.

1.5. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Employ, and require suppliers to employ, a Quality Management System that controls the
design, manufacturing, testing, and inspection of the Work.
B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with latest editions, revisions or supplements of
applicable Codes, Standards and local laws in effect on the date of contract, including, but
not limited to, the following. In all instances of conflict between applicable Codes,
Standards, Specifications, Regulations, Tests and Procedures, follow the most stringent and
conservative requirements. Industry codes and standards governing the design include, but
may not be limited to the following:
1. ANSI B16.5 Pipe Flanges and Flange Fittings
2. HI Hydraulic Institute Pump Standards
3. MSS SP-55 Castings (Surface Inspection)
4. ISO 2548 Acceptance testing for centrifugal, mixed flow and axial pumps
5. Part 1 Class C tests.
6. ISO 1940 Balance Quality Requirements
The standards listed above may reference United States codes and standards. Other
equivalent standards may be accepted. For equipment being furnished for this project,
follow the guidance of the cited Standards in conjunction with the requirements of
applicable local codes. Bring all instances of conflict between referenced codes and
standards and the local codes to the attention of the Engineer for review and resolution.
C. Single-Source Responsibility: Obtain same type of pumps from a single manufacturer with
pumps, baseplates, components, and accessories from a single source. Include furnishing
of electric motor drivers in pump manufacturer’s scope of work. Make pump manufacturer
responsible for motor and pump compatibility and coordination of pump/motor interfaces.
Include responsibility and accountability to answer and resolve problems regarding
compatibility, installation, performance, and acceptance of pumps in pump manufacturer’s
scope of work.
D. Design Criteria: Preliminary engineering drawings may indicate equipment sizes, profiles,
connections and dimensions. Unless noted, this is not intended to be prescriptive.
Alternative products and arrangements may be proposed provided that basic system design
criteria and system functional requirements are met. The burden of proof for equality is on
the proposer.

E. Unless accepted otherwise by the Engineer, use manufactures and installers that employ a
Quality Management System complying with the program described in ISO 9001-2000, or
similar system.

1.6. DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Preparation for shipping: Prepare pumps for long term outdoor covered storage. Clean
flanges and exposed machined metal surfaces and treat with anticorrosion compound after
assembly and testing. Flush internal surface of the pump with a suitable rust preventative.
B. Cover all openings to protect against contamination. Protect flanges, pipe openings, and
nozzles with full diameter flange covers or with screwed in plugs.
C. Ship shaft packing separate for field installation.
D. Provide lifting lugs and clearly mark lifting points.
E. On site, store pumps in a clean, dry location.
F. Retain shipping flange protective covers and protective coatings during storage.
G. Protect bearings and couplings against damage from sand, grit, or other foreign matter.
H. Extended Storage Greater Than 5 Days: Dry internal parts with hot air or a vacuum
producing device. After drying, coat internal parts with light oil, kerosene, or antifreeze.
Dismantle bearings and couplings, dry and coat with an acid free heavy oil, and tag and
store in a dry location. Exception: Do not dismantle factory sealed submersible pumps.
I. Comply with pump manufacturer's rigging instructions for handling.

1.7. EXTRA MATERIAL

A. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed, are packaged
with protective covering for storage, and are identified with labels clearly describing
contents
1. One set of bearings for each type and size of pump.
2. One set of packing or one mechanical seal for each type and size of pump.
3. One set of casing wear rings for each type and size of pump (where used).
4. One set of other Manufacturer-recommended spare parts for each type and size of
pump
5. Spare parts required for the commissioning and start-up of the equipment.
A. Provide a quotation covering recommended on-hand spare parts for two years of continuous
operation. Furnish a complete parts list with an illustrated parts breakdown or a cross-
sectional drawings.
B. Information required with the recommended spare parts includes the following:
1. Part description, serial or part number, and price
2. Reference to assembly drawing
3. Total number of identical parts in the equipment
4. Number of on-hand parts recommended
5. Location and seller of stocked spare parts

PART 2. – PRODUCTS

2.1. GENERAL

A. This specification corresponds with the system developed during preliminary engineering. It
is not intended to be prescriptive. The intent of the specification is to obtain a
manufacturer’s standard product. Products and materials described are representative
examples of acceptable quality and features. Contractor may propose alternative
arrangements and products provided that the basic design criteria and system functional
requirements are met.
B. Provide materials suitable for the intended service and conditions. Where specific materials
are mentioned in this specification, these are provided to identify a minimum standard of
quality, durability and performance. Alternate construction of equal quality, durability and
performance may be proposed.
C. Confirm the suitability of all materials for the application.
D. Provide all new materials, parts, and equipment of current manufacture, free from defects
affecting performance or appearance.
E. Provide corrosion-resistant materials of construction and coatings suitable for a design life of
10 years in exposure to the conditions expected at the project site in the system in which
they will be installed.
F. Use guidelines in Document “Component Numbering Procedure” for designating tag
numbers for all equipment provided.
G. Provide manufacturer’s standard coating system, where suitable, or special coatings where
required by environmental conditions.

2.2. PUMPS

A. General
1. Provide pumps factory assembled and tested.
2. Provide nameplates for all pumps.
3. For pumps with constant speed drivers, furnish pumps capable of at least a 5% head
increase at rated conditions by replacement of the impeller(s) with one(s) of larger
diameter or different hydraulic design.
4. Ensure bolt holes on all connection flanges straddle the horizontal and the vertical
centre lines.
5. Statically and dynamically balance impeller(s) with wear rings (if used), to Grade 2.5
of ISO 1940.
6. Secure impeller to the shaft by the means of a key to prevent circumferential
movement, and by the use of an impeller screw and washer, threaded to prevent axial
movement. Ensure the impeller screw thread tightens with shaft rotation.
7. Provide pumps with replaceable casing wear rings, and if advisable for the intended
service, impeller wear rings, of compatible materials with non-galling characteristics.
Ensure the wear rings are positioned and rigidly attached to prevent loosening. Do
not employ spot/tack welding for attachment of wear rings.
8. Design shafts to carry loads without exceeding normal limits of combined stress,
taking into account fatigue stress due to change in load or speed.

9. Furnish packing type shaft seal or mechanical type shaft seal, as appropriate for the
intended service. Ensure that mechanical seals, if supplied, have adequate seal
lubrication and cooling under all conditions.
10. Size shaft couplings for the required horsepower and speed, and to provide for minor
axial, radial, and angular misalignment within coupling manufacturer’s specified
tolerances.
11. Provide coupling guards in accordance with OSHA requirements.
12. Furnish suction strainers on pump inlets.
13. Where service requires fluid in the sump to be agitated to mobilize solids into
suspension for effect removal, furnish an appropriate agitator or sparging device.
B. Vertical Sump Pumps
1. Furnish wet pit volute type pumps suspended from a support plate by means of a
head column that encloses the pump shaft.
2. Furnish pump discharge pipe separate from the head column and rigidly attached to
the support plate.

3. Bearings
a. Line shaft bearings
i. Product-lubricated cutlass rubber line shaft bearings may be used except
where pumped fluid carries contaminants that would cause the design
service life of the pump to be reduced below the specified minimum if
used for bearing lubrication.
ii. For pumping contaminated liquids, provide heavy duty, grease
lubricated, ball or roller type bearings and isolate each bearing from the
pumped fluid in a sealed bearing housing. Provide a separate lube line
to permit lubrication from above the support plate. Furnish anti-friction
bearings in accordance with AFBMA standards and to give a minimum L-
10 rating life of 25,000 hours.
b. Thrust Bearing
i. Provide anti-friction thrust bearings in accordance with AFBMA
standards and to give a minimum L-10 rating life of 25,000 hours.
ii. Install thrust bearing in the pump motor support. Do not utilize thrust
bearing in the motor driver to absorb the pump thrust or element weight.
iii. Attach thrust bearing securely to the shaft.
iv. Furnish thrust bearing of ample size to absorb all conditions of thrust
generated by the pump under all conditions of starting, stopping or
operation at any capacity from shutoff to runout.
v. For pumps with open or semi-open impellers, arrange the thrust bearing
to allow the impeller and shaft to be moved axially to compensate for
wear.
4. Shaft seal
a. Where pumped fluid is not toxic, hazardous or excessively contaminated
with suspended solids, provide a packing-type shaft seal consisting of a

stuffing box, with gland, cage ring and a minimum of five rings of packing
arranged for suitable lubrication.
b. Where pumped fluid is toxic, hazardous or excessively contaminated with
suspended solids, provide a mechanical seal specifically selected for the
intended service.
5. Shaft couplings
a. Provide pump/motor shaft coupling amply sized for operation of the pump
during starting, stopping or operation at any point on the rated performance
curve.
b. Provide guards of a non-sparking material covering the openings in the
motor support at the location of the shaft coupling.
6. Motors
a. For general motor requirements, refer to Section 221428 – “Motors”.
b. Furnish motors conforming to NEMA MG-1, single, multiple or variable speed,
as required.
a. Provide thermal overload protection and grease-lubricated ball bearings.
C. Vertical Submersible Pump
1. Provide sump of submersible design with motor suitable for the intended service.
2. Fit pump and motor with grease lubricated heavy duty ball or roller anti-friction
bearings in accordance with AFBMA standards and to give a minimum L-10 rating life
of at least 25,000 hours.
3. Provide dual mechanical seals to prevent pumped fluid from entering the motor.
Furnish a moisture probe to detect ingress of pumped fluid.
4. Provide pump with an integral or bolt-on support and discharge elbow.
5. Guide System
a. Furnish a cable or rail guide system that facilitates easy removal of the pump
from the sump without removing any bolts, piping, pipe fittings, or electrical
connections. Include guide brackets, mounting fixtures, lifting chain and guide
rails or cables.
b. Design guide system and discharge connection such that when the pump is
lowered into the sump, the connection will automatically engage the stationary
discharge piping and a positive water tight seal will be made between the pump
and discharge piping, without the need of adjustment, use of fasteners or
similar devices or other motion of the pump unit such as tilting or rotating.
c. Furnish stainless steel lifting chain attached to pump and sump cover at
manhole to permit raising and lowering the units on the guide rails for
inspection, service, or removal. Provide chain with rated lifting capacity of at
least 200% of the weight to be lifted.
6. Motors
a. For general motor requirements, refer to Section 221428 – “Motors”.
b. Furnish hermetically sealed, explosion proof squirrel cage induction motors,
capacitor start type, with built in overload protection conforming to NEMA MG-
1.
c. Furnish motors with Class “F” insulation.

d. Furnish motor with factory sealed multi-conductor waterproof submersible


cables for power, earthing and protection. Provide length sufficient to reach the
above-deck termination point without splices
e. Motor protection; Include an internal moisture sensor and moisture alarm,
stator thermal switches and lower bearing temperature sensor.
f. Design motor to be able to operate continuously while non-submerged, while
pumping under load.
g. Include a lifting eye or lug on motor housing.

2.3. CONTROLS

A. Provide suitable controls and devices to effectively actuate the pumps and provide an
appropriate level of protection for the pumping systems.
B. Furnish control panel in a NEMA or IEC class enclosure. As a minimum, include the
following :
1. Full voltage motor starter with magnetic circuit breaker
2. Contactor
3. Manually reset bimetallic overload relay
4. Three position HOA (Hand-Off-Auto) selector switch
5. Main disconnect switch
6. Terminal board
7. Short circuit protection
8. Control power transformer
9. “RUN”, “READY”, “OFF” and “ALARM” indicating lights
10. Hour meter.
11. Control circuitry to allow automatic pump operation with liquid level sensors
12. Local and remote alarm functions, as dictated by the system design, with silence and
reset buttons.
C. For duplex pump arrangements, provide an electric type alternator designed to operate the
pumps singly, in alternate sequence (lead/lag), or in parallel.
D. Arrange the controls to start and stop the pumps, start the lag pump if the lead pump fails to
start or the influent exceeds the capacity of a single pump, and alternate lead and lag pumps
on each start.
E. Follow Section 260553 “Identification of Electrical Systems” for electrical equipment tagging.
F. Sequence of Operation
1. Provide appropriate type float switches to initiate pump actuation. Do not use
mercury switches. Enclose the switches in enclosures suitable for the area where
installed.
2. Actuation points:
a. Simplex Pump Arrangement
i. Low level (1st float switch set-point) – stop pump at minimum sump level
ii. High level (2nd float switch set-point) – start pump
iii. High-high level (3rd float switch set-point) – activate local and remote
alarm

b. Duplex Pump Arrangement (Pump-down arrangement)


i. Low level (1st float switch set-point) – stop operating pump(s) at
minimum sump level
ii. High level (2nd float switch) – start lead pump
iii. High-high level (3rd float switch) – start lag pump and activate local and
remote alarm.
G. Make provision in the design of the controls for any analog and digital data signals
generated by controllers, measuring instruments, protective devices and alarms to be
communicated to the airport central control via TCP/IP over the plant fiber optics network.

PART 3. – EXECUTION

3.1. FABRICATION

A. Use manufacturer’s standard procedures for fabrication and manufacturing, provided these
meet or exceed the requirements of applicable codes or standards for fabrication and
manufacture of the equipment specified.
B. Follow applicable portions of Sections 220501 “Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods”
and 260502 “Basic Electrical Materials and Methods”.

3.2. SHOP INSPECTION AND TESTING

A. Perform shop hydrostatic and performance tests in accordance with HI standards at rated
speed over the complete range of minimum flow to runout to demonstrate fulfilment of
efficiency and rating guarantees.
B. Conduct performance tests using cold water (less than 150°F). Record readings at a
minimum of five points, including minimum flow, rated flow, maximum flow and/or runout
conditions. Record water temperatures and correct performance test results to a design
average temperature.
C. Record vibration level for each test point.
D. Conduct tests using ample NPSH available to pump during steady-state operating
conditions.
E. Submit certified test data to the Engineer for review and obtain acceptance prior to shipment.

3.3. INSTALLATION

A. Comply with manufacturer’s written installation instructions.


B. Install pumps in the locations indicated. Ensure access is provided for ease of maintenance,
including removal of motors, impellers, couplings and accessories.
C. Support connecting piping such that no deflection loads are carried by the pump discharge
nozzles.
D. Anchor pumps, pump support plates and controllers to concrete foundation pads using
embedded anchor bolts. Grout base to achieve final positioning. Do not use concrete
expansion anchors for securing equipment subject to vibration
E. Pipe packing gland leakage to the site drainage system.
F. Install wiring and make electrical connections in accordance with applicable Sections.

3.4. ADJUSTING

A. Flush and clean pump internals.


B. Where required, align pump and motor shafts in accordance with manufacturer’s stated
coupling tolerances. Record and submit record of alignment.
C. Where required adjust impeller position according to manufacturer’s requirements. Record
and submit record of adjustment.
D. Verify and document lubrication. Clean grease-lubricated bearings and fill with new lubricant
according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
E. For submersible pumps, check action of pump installation and removal guide system.
F. Ensure tightness of all connections

3.5. COMMISSIONING

A. Pre-Operation
1. Disconnect pump couplings and check motors for proper rotation.
2. Check that pumps are free to rotate by hand. Do not operate pump, if bound or even
drags slightly, until cause of trouble is determined and corrected.
3. Check and verify correct function of pump and motor controls and protection.
4. Verify float switch set points.
B. Start-Up
1. Run each pump manually. Check general mechanical operation of pumps and
motors.
2. Observe leakage from stuffing boxes. Let packing "run in" before reducing leakage
through stuffing boxes. Adjust gland.
3. Perform integrated system tests to ensure pumps perform properly according to their
intended function in the system. Demonstrate correct operation of each function
including communication of outputs via TCP/IP Ethernet
4. Perform field pump performance certification tests. Verify that each pump unit
complies.
