What is Materials Engineer?
Materials engineers typically specialize in metals, plastics or ceramics. They may develop composite
materials, or study the atomic structure of materials in order to discover new applications for their
mechanical, electrical or chemical properties. Engineers may use power tools, lab equipment and
computer technology to process materials.

Responbility of Material Engineer :

Job responsibilities vary according to the size and type of employer. However, duties typically
include: developing, modifying, testing and evaluating materials, providing technical advice about
the suitability of materials, diagnosing faults, advising on, planning and organising inspections,
maintenance and repairs, overseeing operational quality control processes, liaising with suppliers,
customers and manufacturing/development staff, supervising engineering and technical staff,and
undertaking relevant research.

Duties of Material Engineer :

Materials engineers typically do the following: Prepare proposals and budgets, analyze labor costs, write
reports, and perform other managerial tasks, supervise the work of technologists, technicians, and other
engineers and scientists, design and direct the testing of processing procedures, monitor how materials
perform and evaluate how they deteriorate, determine causes of product failure and develop ways of
overcoming such failure, evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to the design
objectives of processes or products and evaluate the impact of materials processing on the environment

Metal/materials production, manufacturing and process companies, research and development
organisations, utilities companies, oil and gas companies, and the Civil Service
