Alfred Bernhard Nobel

Born in 1883, Stockholm Sweden on October 21

He died in the year 1896 on December 10

Nobel fueled the industrial boom.
As a child Nobel took to the things his father did. His father worked in manufacturing torpedoes
and mines, so naturally, Nobel was interested in chemistry and engineering, as well as
explosives. Nobel originally was interested in a liquid invented by Italien chemist Ascanio
Sobrero. It was much stronger than gunpowder put was quite unstable. This oily liquid was a
compound of glycerol and nitric acid and Nobel was fascinated with it. He could even light it up
underwater. His father invented a way to mass produce the stuff and all Nobel had to do was
invent a way to set it off safely… the mercury fulminate cap.

In 1863 Nobel started a factory to mass produce nitroglycerin, however, only a year later the
factory blew up and killed Nobel’s brother, Emil Oskar Nobel. Nobel was devastated and he set
out to find a substance that could absorb the nitroglycerin and make it safe to transport, without
diminishing its explosive properties. He found the substance kieselguhr. It was exactly what he
was looking for and with a little more experimenting he patented dynamite in 1867. This was
huge for the mining industry and for military use. Nobel was not happy about all the military use
and wished his products would be used for peace. When he died in 1896, he left a will that,
while problematic, would lead to the creation of the Nobel foundation. It would annually award
for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, and
literature. Economics were eventually added later on. The prize consists of a gold medal, a sum
of money,and a certificate.

Alfred Nobel invented dynamite, which is five times as strong as black powder, easy to produce,
and safe to use. This caused a boom in the mining industry and used extensively for military
purposes. This made him extremely rich and successful as well as revolutionizing mining and
helping to propel the second industrial revolution. Of course, he also founded the Nobel
foundation. This gave people doing extraordinary things recognition for their efforts and help
boost the message of peace. Overall, Alfred Nobel revolutionized mining and helped spread the
message of peace during the second industrial revolution.
